East swell keeps coming for days as ex-TC Fili drifts through the slot
South-east Queensland and Northern NSW Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri 8th Apr)
Forecast Summary (tl;dr)
- TC Fili and long cradling E'ly fetch supplies plenty of swell Sat, with a late pulse Sun, and SE winds- stacks of surf on the Points
- Surf holding at strong levels Mon, with light winds, slowly easing into Tues/Wed with light morning winds
- Unstable outlook going into Thurs and Easter Weekend, stay tuned for updates
Recap
Plenty more Point surf over the last 36-48hrs with size in the 3-4ft range, building today into the 4-5ft range. SE winds have mostly confined surfing to the Points, which have been crowded. With so many waves on offer though, a drift through the lineup usually results in acceptable results. Plenty more surf to come as TC Fili drifts through the wide open slot between. New Caledonia and the North Island.
This weekend (Apr 9-10)
No great change to the weekend f/cast. A large 1031 hPa high straddling Tasmania ( no longer a peanut high) is extending a deep E’ly flow along the f/cast region. TC Fili has weakened and is drifting southwards to the SE now of New Caledonia, anchored by a long fetch of E’ly winds from the cradling high. That equals lots of East swell through the coming days, but winds will mostly be favouring sheltered Points.
Very simple f/cast for our region this weekend so let’s not overthink it. Waves, waves and more waves on the Points with SE winds across the region.
Size in the 4-6ft range Sat, mostly from the E, with a few swell trains from the S/SE, although these will be less noticeable at most north facing locations. A brief window of SW to SSW winds is on offer through the Southern Gold Coast to Northern NSW region, before winds swing around to the SE through the day.
Sunday brings more of the same. A slight easing in size is expected, back into the 3-5ft range but there’ll still be plenty of waves, and a late pulse in longer period E swell should pump the tires up again before dark. Again, lighter SW to SSW winds on offer across the Southern Gold Coast and Far Northern NSW through Sun morning but probably not enough to open up most beachbreaks.
Next week (Apr11 onwards)
Pencil Mon in for a surf if you’ve got the means to do so and missed out on the weekend. TC Fili will have been slowly drifting through the wide open South Pacific swell window between New Caledonia and the North Island between Fri-Sun and that will see better quality E swell of a longer period fill in late Sun, with Mon seeing strong 4-6ft surf from the E. Even better, winds finally co-operate with a light offshore flow expected to last at least through lunch-time before tending to a very late/light Seabreeze.
E swell continues through Tues, at slightly lower levels although still with plenty of size in the 4-5ft range expected, with a slow easing trend through the a’noon. Winds look great again Tues with light land breezes tending to light SE breezes through the day. Classic Autumn conditions.
Wed continues the smorgasbord with swell tracking around the E/SE and slowly easing.
By Thurs next week models are really struggling to resolve a complex synoptic environment. We’ll still have E’ly swell from the remains of ex-TC Fili which will see surf hold in the 3-4ft range.
The issue will be an area of low pressure moving through the South Australian/NSW interior. Thats likely to combine with a trough line off the NSW coast which may see variable winds, or a more NE flow into the trough, as a weak area of high pressure moves into the Tasman Sea.
It’s possible these winds will tend more W/NW to NW if the low tracks towards the NSW/Victorian border Good Friday. That may see some small NE windswell, cleaning up and mixed in with the easing E swell.
GFS now suggests the low moves offshore later Easter Saturday, possibly deepening Sunday with a rapid rise in S swell Easter Mon.
EC model maintains an interior trough and a N’ly flow along the coast Easter Sat/Sun.
That instability looks to be a feature of the Easter weekend, so we’ll need to come back to it with fresh eyes on Mon and see how it’s shaping up.
Check back then and have a great weekend!

Superbank looking, well, Super (Greeny cam died this morning, will be replaced Monday, soz).
I reckon Jono disabled it ;) ;p
hahahaha.
I'd like to see some stats on surfable days at the Superbank over the last 3-5months.
Would have to be one of the most consistent runs of Point surf - ever?
I live in cooly
Literally feels like we've had waves all Jan/Feb
Been a good summer
Have to be up there with the 50 day Kirra swell of the 80's the old boys talk about with great reverence
cyclone Bola I believe, I have an old Surfing life that has a 4 page spread of scat Pitchers 20 second tube at Kirra...
It should be like this every fukin year! Less rain and dirty water though.
Some great waves through greeny, def not all time but fun, consistent and no sweep.
Where would get the smallest swell this weekend? Which point would have the more gentle stuff?
Clarkes in Byron maybe?
C ya at noosa boys!!! It'll be off tits!!!!
But dont tell anyone..... Its a secret. Ssssh.....
Ya bastard Boogie, now look what you've gone and done.... entertaining viewing this morning at Nationals, wear your Gath :)
The crowd on the superbank cam is out of control
Crazy crowd considering this swell isn't anything great at the moment .
Not compared to the days we've had this year anyway
School holidays and the gc beachies weren't really a fun alternative this morn' unless it was a one and done surf or you had ski assist or were up for a paddle/duckdive-athon
Chunky.
What’s up with the beans being spilled in such detail on the sunshine coast report
It's hardly a secret that the points work on a large easterly swell, and this is a surf forecasting site.
I think the comment is fair enough. Crowds thin out down the beach as everyone flocks to the points. Sometimes its good not to remind the people that they can turn their heads and look down there for a less crowded option.
But then again i would never have looked at the forecast until the comment was made, so maybe the original comment will bring it to people attention?
Finding it hard to get motivated this morning. Had an early paddle at burleigh which was average. Now watching the crowd at greeny which is still hectic and it just not big enough at Kirra.
Ascat pass looks strong this morning
It does. A lot of energy being imparted into vast areas of the Eastern swell window right now.
It’s on the pump through the superbank now
spend all day looking at the cams and not surfing Burleigh? itsa trap to easily fall into living on the GC. I do that - thinking it will be too crowded and shit, wrong tide, but watching the cams all day... I now go one day on one day off. had a sick surf yesty at greenie and went mtbing today at Nerang. no one on the trails and they have regroomed a few of the park trails.. froth..
I put the time in out in the water, thick crowd but if you got one it was worth it.
Some super fun ones on dark this arvo, crowd was surprisingly not too bad
saw some gems, but sadly each one i got wasnt. got one nice double up wide set, thought i was going to get an all time barrel, only for the thing to foamball and reform all the way to big groyne.
Sounds like a good system PS.
Forecast is dreaming calling it 5ft this morning it's barely 3 .
3-5ft it says... Cams shows just that.
Misunderstood what I was trying to do there haha
Gotcha
It was a sight to see this morning.
Dozens of Brisbane surfers driving down the M1, regularly reloading Swellnet on their phone for updates, finally reading a comment from Js94, who contradicted the surf report, the surf forecast, the Forecaster Notes, the live surfcam vision plus the radio surf reports, WhatsApp groups and Instagram influencers.
Despondent, each carload of surfers slid into the left hand lane and took the off-ramp at Yatala, re-routing their trip back home.
It was not to be a surf day for them.
Glory to Js94!
Hahaha are you telling me every brissy surfer doesn't read the comments in here before coming down ?
Back to the drawing board for my plans of less crowded waves
Easter school hols with point swells and winds
Best of luck.
I read this, and it was the straw on the camels back - came up today and got a cracker from behind the rock. Cheers.
Loved your patience Ben with this "smart" comment....surfed somewhere north of Kirra, few bombs but mostly closing out...too fast waves, not expecting.
Hahaha
Got a smoker from Boiling Pot to Noosa Surf Club topped of by the Oils farewell tour at Kawana.
Hard to top yesterday & still buzzing!!!
Your legs would have been smoking, dazzler, that's for sure. I was up there last week and got a couple from the pot to little cove and I was completely cooked. To the surf club....fark, you must have had to lay down for a rest.
Legs were cooked!! Had to give my old man hip a rub as I got to First Point.
Easy the longest wave I’ve ever caught.
Best Oils show I’ve ever seen!
Super Saturday.
Currumbin Alley has been all time and best thing is it’s the closest point break from the M1.
Hahaha...
Coupla 5-6ft sets on the Tweed this arvo. Strong lines.
Definitely solid on the tweed today. Crowded at the usual haunts too, but everyone got waves.
Pure surf porn on Greenmount hill.
Money well spent dredging tweed bar, looks to be worse than before dredging started
Fully pumping with bluebird conditions, just about everywhere.
Tried getting up at 5.30 to surf the local but was too tired, missed prob the best day all year. Idiot.
Will sneak outta work early this arvo and try to get a few with 1000 of my mates at rainbow bay.
Hopefully tomorrow is just as good and i can get a feed on!
Just barely anywhere up here.
Dredging just before or during cyclone season will have that bluebird condition like effect to the tune of money down the drain
best waves I have had since the last time I had my best waves.
surfed an out of the way spot this morning that sucks in all the swell. banks were amazing and pretty sizey and soo hollow.. frothing!!!!
oh and Mr Shearer thanks for the on-point swell forecast about mondays bump with offshore winds. based on that we made a call on where to go - couple of barrels I got this morning be worth more than 100 years of swellnet subscriptions!!! Yew... stoked.
Lots of sweep at Burleigh. couple of great waves but arms/shoulders are fuckkkkkked.
Perfect morning!
Silky and pumping!
Yep cheers Freeride. You’re the master forecaster and I believe swellnet are lucky to have you on their team.
Greenmount surfcam is back!
Sick ones this morning, maybe 3-5ft with the odd bigger one earlier though it seems to be dropping off a little.
Very civil lineup too.
Looks like the missing cam really affected the crowds too :)
Snapper, greenmount was superbusy todays, fook, no a wave was empty , crazy sh1t. Millons of pple, saw occy got a few good tight tubes at greeny.
