South Australian Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 13th July June)

Best Days: South Coast Thursday onwards through the weekend, Mid Coast Sunday morning

Recap

Another large stormy day of waves across the Mid Coast with damaging winds and waves hitting most of the coast, best in stormy haunts. The South Coast was clean through the morning but small, building strongly through the afternoon as winds persisted from the west.

Today the swell is peaking down South with large clean but raw 6-8ft waves around town with a W/NW breeze, while the Mid was easing from a smaller and choppy 3ft.

This week and weekend (Jul 14 - 17)

The vigorous and damaging frontal system that pushed through yesterday is now moving off to the east and with this we'll see the swell easing across our coasts.

The Mid will drop quickly, but the South Coast will continue to see large waves due to trailing fetches of gale to severe-gale W/SW winds just within our southern swell window this evening and tomorrow.

A slow easing trend is due through tomorrow from 6ft+ across Middleton, while a good reinforcing S/SW groundswell Friday will keep sets around 4-5ft+ before easing off later in the day and further into the weekend.

The Mid Coast is expected to ease back from 2ft, tiny into Friday.

Conditions will be best in protected spots and around town with a W/NW breeze tomorrow, and then at most spots Friday with a NW breeze.

The weekend is looking great with the S/SW swell continuing to drop into Saturday ahead of a new W/SW groundswell into the afternoon and secondary pulse for Sunday.

These W/SW swells, the best for Sunday are being generated by a flurry of strong frontal activity in the central Indian Ocean, pushing towards WA over the coming days.

Only a slight increase in size is due later Saturday across both coasts, with Sunday expected to see 1-2ft waves on the Mid and small 2ft+ sets at Middleton with bigger 3-4ft waves out at Waits and Parsons (Saturday morning will be a touch bigger).

Offshore winds are due all weekend down South with a N/NE'ly Saturday and N/NE tending N/NW breeze Sunday, while the Mid will be OK early Sunday.

Longer term good inconsistent levels of W/SW swell are due into next week, but more on this Friday.
