Indonesia/Maldives forecast February 29
Indian Ocean Basin analysis by Craig Brokensha (issued Thursday 29th February)
This week through next (Mar 1 - 8)
We’ve got an active period of surf ahead with an initial pulse of mid-period S/SW swell tomorrow afternoon and Saturday morning due to be followed up by some better S/SW groundswell Sunday.
The source of Saturday’s swell was discussed in Tuesday’s notes, that being a healthy polar low to the south-west of Western Australia, while a strong, trailing system is currently generating a good reinforcing S/SW groundswell for Tuesday, peaking through the afternoon. This swell won’t be as large but still sizey before easing into Wednesday and Thursday, slowed by some smaller, background SW energy.
The next pulse of size is due later Friday but more so Saturday next weekend, with the source being back to back relatively weak but healthy polar fronts firing up around the Heard Island region this weekend, into Monday.
Size wise, a mix of swells should peak Saturday (the 9th) to 5-6ft on the sets across exposed breaks. After this things go a little quiet so make the most of the coming swells.
Across to the Maldives, and a mix of mid-period S’ly swell and background S/SE energy should be replaced with stronger levels of groundswell Sunday afternoon from the polar low discussed above.
This will ease Monday, but a slow moving low that’s formed south-east of Madagascar should generate a good pulse of reinforcing, mid-period S’ly swell early-mid next week.
The size should ease into the end of the week, with the next pulse of S’ly swell arriving from the activity around Heard Island next Friday. This looks smaller than the swell earlier in the week.
Other than that, a small SE trade-swell signal is likely to start showing through next week, but more on this next update.
Eastern Indonesia:
Inconsistent, mid-period S/SW swell filling in tomorrow, reaching 4-5ft across exposed breaks into the afternoon, easing from a similar size Saturday.
Larger, S/SW groundswell for Sunday to 6-8ft across exposed breaks, easing Monday.
Reinforcing, moderate-large sized S/SW swell Tuesday to 4-6ft across exposed breaks through the afternoon (possibly undersized early).
Moderate + sized mid-period S/SW swell building Friday (8th), peaking Saturday (9th) to 5-6ft across exposed breaks.
Variable winds tomorrow, tending weak W/NW-W/SW on the weekend and Monday, variable Tuesday before freshening from the W/NW-W/SW mid-late next week and weekend.

Latest notes are live.
6 foot straight off the plane, that should be "fun". Kiddies Corner here I come :)
Fun waves today 3-4ft , wind was offshore earlier . February was a fun month all round, I had low expectations and have been pleasantly surprised .
Was a fun morning. A bit of a wait between sets but uncrowded and easy like Sunday morning.
That looks like a bit of fun.
Swell filled in more today in Sumbawa, 3-5ft
@Roystein , is the wind going around in circles there ? Not sure if you’re east or west sumbawa . It started pulsing today overhead and then a cell appeared over rinjani and was heading our way . Went from 2knot southerly to howling easterly then NE and chopped it up a bit . Managed 10 great waves before wind got up , paddle out catch wave paddle out catch wave , this old bloke was fucked after 10 in a row , put a 3 hour session in yesterday . Massage never felt better this arvo .
Supa west sumbawa, yesterday was a little different in that it did chop and change a bit, and never really glassed off late once it got up , mostly west but it did go south east for a bit mid arv
Also like you Supa, had super fun wave filled session, body getting sorer each day…
Nice.
Beautiful long lines this afternoon, next few days should be pumping.
Oo yeah!
just wondering Craig are the Indo forecaster notes from before 2023 available anywhere? great for hindcasting :)
Epic morning. Had a pretty dreamy session at one of the jewels in the Indonesian surfing crown with just myself and none other than Swellnet’s own Roystein. Trading waves for about a 90 minutes before the first other person paddled out. Saw him get some bombs.
Nice work, legend. One to reflect on when you’re an old bugger.
God damn you guys
We zigged when everyone else zagged. Now the wind is turning it to crud and the Bintangs are super dingin.
Mission accomplished.
Yes we did SJW
Was great cruising with you, last Binny and Sampeaorna to reminisce before packing to head home, would have lover a longer stay…next time…
Get into that left before you leave.
SlackJaw ...What are you seeing in Indo in way of Board Design...Many Twins or Long Twins or just Regular HP Shorty's
Do you have a D.S. in your Board Bag ?
Seeing quite a few twins, not so many Torren Martin style mid length things.
I didn’t bring the DS 7’0 on this sub- mission because the wave I was targeting didn’t require it. Left it back on Bali. Here is Super round, Nordstream pipeline style cylinders but it’s better to get under them on a shorter board. I personally find that length can be a liability for this wave but Roystein was doing very nice work on a good looking 6’6 round pin.
We both got some caverns so each to their own. Smiles all round.
HP shortboards seem to be dominant in Indo in general but you do see quite a lot of wide tail hybrid- fish type gear.
Sounds like a great time,
