Recap
Pumping SE-E swells to 6-8ft yesterday with offshore winds have held at similar size today with light SW tending SE winds.
This week and next week (Jul 30 - Aug 9)
No change to the outlook as a massive, slow moving low pressure system in the Tasman and strong high over Tasmania combine to fill the Tasman Sea with gales to strong gales, generating large swells for NETas. We are starting to see that system slowly move north and the more southwards fetch start to ease in strength through today and into tomorrow. That will be offset by a developing fetch of gales off the North Island, which will supply reinforcing energy from the E-E/NE Fri over the weekend. Local winds will slowly ease by Fri and will tend N'ly then offshore from Sat a'noon.
Sizey E-E/SE swells continue through tomorrow in the 5-6ft range with lighter winds from the SE expected, which should be light and variable early.
Those variable winds (offshore early) should persist into Fri morning before winds start to tend more N’ly and freshen. We’ll see easing swells through Fri from the E/SE but plenty of size will hold through the day as a reinforcing pulse of E’ly swell from a Cook Strait/North Island fetch rebuilds size to 5-6ft.
Into the weekend and we’ll see a slow steady roll-off in size from Friday’s heights. Winds will tend N’ly through Sat before a weak front passing over the state brings a W’ly change. Plenty of size still left in the morning with 4-5ft sets, easing through the day.
W tending W/NW winds Sun will be perfect for an easing swell with size to 3ft early, dropping back to 1-2ft in the a’noon.
Next week will see tiny/flat surf establish as high pressure moves into the Tasman and swell generating winds dry up.
We may see a tiny wave Mon but following that we’ll see days of tiny surf into the end of next week.
Lets see how next week look’s when we come back on Fri.
Seeya then.
