Fun S'ly groundswell on the cards
Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Guy Dixon (issued Wednesday 27th July)
Best Days: Thursday and Saturday
Recap:
The surf has been tiny over the past couple of days, generally less than 1ft but clean under persistent offshore breezes.
This week (Thursday 28th - Friday 29th):
South facing beaches are looking at some fresh size on Thursday as a mix of swell fill in.
A strong frontal progression looks to move in a zonal motion overnight steering 40-50kt west/southwesterly fetches locally into Thursday morning. This swell should also be accompanied by more distant, but weaker southerly energy generated by southwesterly fetches trailing a weak front which passed through the swell window today.
This mix of energy should provide options in the 3-4ft range at south facing beaches into Thursday afternoon, fading on Friday from the 2ft range.
Conditions are likely to remain clean for the remainder of the week as winds swing from west/northwesterly to northwesterly.
This weekend (Saturday 30th - Sunday 31st):
A second fun southerly pulse is due on Saturday created by a broad and well consolidated fetch moving to the south on Friday night, although with a smaller and less intense core fetch. Although moving in an easterly direction, it’s trajectory looks slower, with southwesterly breezes encompassing a larger area.
By mid-morning, south facing beaches should be offering good sets in the 3-5ft range, fading from around 2-3ft on Sunday.
The majority of the weekend should remain clean under persistent northwesterly tending west/northwesterly breezes.
Next week (Monday 1st onward):
A slim and elongated southwesterly fetch should move into the swell window soon after although weaker and lacking alignment to the coast. Nevertheless, there should also be some residual energy lingering from the previous system as the fetches lose alignment over the Tasman.
The resultant swell isn’t looking like anything groundbreaking, but should maintain a small amount of energy into next week, with options in the 2ft range on Monday, smaller on Tuesday.
