Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Guy Dixon (issued Wednesday 22nd June)

Best Days: Saturday

Recap:

Tuesday’s swell came in on forecast with strong sets ranging from 4-6ft, fading significantly into today with left over options easing from the 2ft range.

Conditions have remained clean each day under southwesterly tending westerly winds.

This week (Thursday 23rd - Friday 24th):

A post frontal airflow has been moving over the region today, with southwesterly fetches of 30-35kts becoming elongated and extending to the south.

While the alignment, intensity and size of this fetch could be a lot better, this will likely to be the most significant energy in the coming days, albeit negligible. South facing beaches should pick up hints of southerly energy to around 1ft or so on Thursday, without much more to follow.

A northwesterly breeze will keep conditions clean on Thursday, tending southwesterly on Friday as the swell dwindles.

This weekend (Saturday 25th - Sunday 26th) and next week (Monday 27th onward):

A strong front and cut-off low look to move over the nation’ s southeast late in the week, with southwesterly fetches increasing off the coast of eastern Tasmania late on Friday.

Winds should swing south/southwesterly overnight from Friday into Saturday, hugging the coast and remaining sustained at around 25-30kts. South facing beaches should offer sets in the 2ft+ range on Saturday morning, easing throughout the day as this local fetch shifts offshore.

Core winds along southern quadrants of the low as it moves over the central Tasman should become elongated and extend southward. Refracted southeasterly energy from this fetch should fill in late on Sunday, more so on Monday providing sets in the 3ft range. Throughout Tuesday, the swell should ease with the chance of seeing a small pulse on Wednesday generated by distant southeasterly fetches off the far southern tip of NZ.

The majority of the weekend should remain clean with a southwesterly breeze persisting throughout Saturday, tending west/southwesterly and eventually west/northwesterly on Sunday.

Breeze should continue swinging from west through to northwesterly early next week keeping conditions workable.

More detail on Friday.
