Off season activity in the Sunshine State
October's not normally revered for its Queensland wave count. With the swell window still undergoing spring-time transition, summer trades still a couple of months away and Tasman storm systems are often aimed in the wrong direction. Brisk northerly winds frequent the southern Coral Sea, usually blowing out any swells that care to make landfall.
But, an out-of-season flow across the northern Tasman late last week, coupled with a deepening trough just off the Northern NSW coastline kicked up a punchy short range swell that delivered a half-week of waves from the Capricornia Coast all the way down to Eden.
Sure, it wasn't especially large, and it took a couple of days for surface conditions to sort themselves out in many areas, but any rideable surf in Queensland is generally treated as a bonus at this time of the year.
The Gold Coast points finally came to life on Monday, with light offshore winds grooming crisp corduroy. Adam Weathered captured these great images from Burleigh Heads. //BEN MATSON
