Sand and Cement
Recently Swellnet ran an interview with Andrew Pitt, the co-ordinator of Cronulla's forthcoming 'sand slug'. The sand slug will be created when dredged sand is dumped in a small area 250 metres offshore from The Wall at Cronulla. If all goes to plan the slug will work like a bombora, refracting swells that pass over it and causing peaks to break shoreward of it.
A by-product should also be a minor 'elbow' of sand extending out from the shoreline, created due to wave energy being expended further offshore than the current situation.
While surfers will be looking offshore at the waves, Sutherland Shire Council will doubtless be paying more attention to the shoreline and the anticipated build up of sand. Especially after seeing the current state of sand erosion around The Wall.
