Pumping off season
Indonesia's prime months for surfing are usually between April and October, when the southern Indian Ocean is at its most active, and when the trades are scheduled to blow consistently across the archipelago. However, good waves frequently fall outside of these months - you just need a little more patience, and a little more creativity.
Queensland native Ryan Williams has been based in North Sumatra for the last couple of months and has scored some amazing waves with very little crowds. Here's a snapshot of his trip to date. //BEN MATSON
