Trailer: The Untold Story of Andy Irons - video
"The Andy Irons Story is a documentary film that focuses on the true, untold story of one of the world’s most prolific surfers. The intent of the film is to show the unfiltered life of Andy Irons, one that was filled with energy, passion, success, and challenges. Challenges that pushed Andy to the brink and were both the best parts of Andy and the hardest to handle. The filmmakers, Steve and Todd Jones, wanted to create a film that captured the true essence of Andy Irons - his family, his friends, and those who later realized a friendship that at times was hard to understand."
With principal cinematography done the filmmakers are doing a quick whip around trying to raise funds to finish the film. They've launched a Kickstarter page to raise the necessary $150K and it is there on the Kickstarter page that you can view the film's trailer.

Still can't work out why the WSL tried to cover the whole thing up. AFL have done a great job of breaking down the stigma of mental health. Lots of maybe's however I still think they have done little in this direction and owe Andy something. Another guy topped himself recently (can't remember his name a Photog I think) and there wasn't a squeak out of the WSL. Waste.
The recent tragic death was David Wood, the very likeable Head of Security for the ASP and then the WSL.
Not knocking the movie, it could be really good, but I feel Andy's story has been fairly fully told. During his time off from the ASP, it was made clear that drug abuse was a key issue Andy was seeking to resolve. The shock of his death was partly due to everybody's hope he was on the path to recovery.
The idea that friends and colleagues who may have afforded Andy some privacy over his private life, rather than putting everything out there for the general amusement of the peanut gallery, share some guilt in Andy's death is ridiculous and not borne out by the empirical evidence about assisting people with drug abuse problems.
Wal you misread what I was saying. The guy had bipolar which is bloody awful and needs careful and serious medication to control or a personality which can handle to super highs and lows. Covering this up just adds to the stigma. It is simply a disease like any other and needs people to accept it. He was obviously self medicating on god knows what which killed him. If they could have got to some sort of rehab he might still be alive. The Hawaiian macho approach isn't the answer.
No doubt there's been a lot of myths, rumours and gossiping about Andy's life. Could be a good doco to watch if they're really honest. Keep an open mind, might learn something
The fella was one of the best surfers of all time.
I'd say the best in the world for a few years.
Can't wait to see a full length movie based on his life. The drugs deal is a bit peripheral really - not like it's a unique or even a novel path to tread. Probably a fair percentage of every town in the world is facing the same situation.
But the surfing and the personality that enabled it ...now that is some inspiring stuff.
So let's celebrate the man and his spirit as much as he deserves.
On the big screen would be incredible.
Whaddya reckon about the crowd funding Hako?
I've done a complete 180 and embracing it goofy, I've got a crowd funding thingy to pay for the shortfall of funds on the extension to the house I started 5 years ago, the missus has ramped up the nagging so I needed to pull the finger out, I'm hoping to get on the program to host some refugees to use for cheap/free labour.
Ps. Can't wait to see this, the guy was a fucken animal in scary waves
Good thing that theres going to be no surf industry companies funding this film.
,
Incredible surfer and already has legendary status.
I do hope the untold looks at his drug use and abuse - there is a powerful message in that fall all of us. Let our kids admire his surfing and determination but warn about the dangers of drugs. I'm not privy to other challengers but it does feel like the WSL and journalists certainly glossed over his dark side and demons.
trailer looks amazing

Do yourself a favour find a youtube video of andy in indo titled andy irons in indo , the best surfing i have ever seen amazing surfing he was an absolute beast.
This one?
wow! thanks for sharing
thats the one ! i was watching it last night and just totally mindblown , thanks for sharing that it is pretty impressive surfing
That Deserts footage is unreal.
Forgotten how good Andy was, awesome vid awesome style.........legend!
Incredible those full rail turns are nuts and I think I counted 4 back door barrels on one wave. I think Dane has been watching some of his old vids. So much power and poise has aged a bit.
Sorry hasn't aged a bit
Some of those turns at Deserts are mind boggling...especially a couple of them down the end of the reef when it's super shallow and churning on itself. Anyone who's surfed the wave knows that section and just how ridiculous it was what he was doing there.
Timeless stuff.
That is exactly what i was thinking that reef is so shallow and sharp but he doesnt take the foot off the throttle for a second, i forgot how good he was and it is just the perfect style and power no fancy crap with andy !
That clip from Indo was sick. Damn I would have loved to see Andy in heats with Medina and Toledo.
Weird that TGR is crowd funding. They're not a two bit operation, surely they'd have a cool $150k lying around to complete the project.
As for bipolar, heavy disease. I found The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, by Steven Fry, to be really insightful. It's on YouTube if anyone is interested.
"Weird that TGR is crowd funding. They're not a two bit operation, surely they'd have a cool $150k lying around to complete the project."
And if other people crowd fund it the money will still be lying around, rule number 2 in how to stay rich, get someone else to foot the bill
