Deck Bar Pro carries vital ratings points in Bacardi Surf Tour
Sydney’s Dee Why beach will host the 4th event of the Bacardi Surf Tour this Sunday with the top five surfers on the ratings confirmed to compete in the Deck Bar Pro.
Blake Thornton, Dayyan Neve, Perth Standlick, Dane Atcheson and Nic Squiers will all be looking for a big result at Dee Why before heading into the last event of the tour at Mona Vale later in the month.
With the overall Bacardi Surf Tour Champion pocketing $2500, Maroubra’s Blake Thornton holds a slender lead in the ratings over North Steyne’s Dayyan Neve who rocketed up the ratings after taking out the Stowaway Pro at Freshwater last month.
Neve’s been busy lately renovating his house and hasn’t surfed much since his win at Freshwater, “There hasn’t been much surf lately and I have been flat out on the drop saw renovating my house so if I get thru a few heats on Sunday it will be a bonus”, said Neve.
Sunday’s event will also celebrate 50 years in surfing for former Dee Why local Col “Luigi” Gow. Gow won his first surfing event at Dee Why in 1966 and has been involved with the sport ever since.
There is no questioning Gow’s commitment to surfing, growing up at Enmore Luigi’s first ever surf was at Dee Why in 1962 as a 12 year old. By the time he was 14 he would carry his 9’6 Longboard 2km’s to Newtown train station where he would catch a train to Circular Quay and then the ferry to Manly followed by a bus to Dee Why. The locals appreciated his dedication and in 1964 he was asked to join the Dee Why Surfing Fraternity, two years later he won his first Open surfing event at Dee Why.

Gow can remember the day he was nicknamed Luigi, “In 1964 I was hanging at Crawford’s Milk Bar and Henry Anderson asked me what my name was, I said Colin Gow and he said Gow spelt backwards is Wog so your name is now Luigi”, said Gow.
After competing for 25 years Gow moved into the judges chair and 8 years ago created the computer scoring system - CompuSurf. Gow now travels all around Australia working at surfing events with his computer scoring system that is growing in popularity.
Sunday’s winner will receive $1000 as well as 1000 Ratings points and prizes from Bacardi, G-Shock and Swellnet.
Straight after the Man on Man Final competitors and members of the Dee Why Surfing Fraternity will attend the Bacardi After Party at Deck Bar for the crowning of the Inaugural Deck Bar Pro Champion.
Each of the five events on the Bacardi Surf Tour carry ratings points with the overall tour winner being decided on each surfer’s best four results. The tour winner will receive $2500 and prizes from Bacardi, G-Shock and Swellnet.
The 2016 Deck Bar Pro is proudly supported by Bacardi, G-Shock and Swellnet.

I think that would have been Henry Addison. As for Colin he is always the oldest grommet wherever he surfs. Great enthusiasm, positive energy and, I haven't surfed with him for a while, but I reckon he could still out paddle most surfers thirty years younger than him.
Yep BB Henry was a cool dude....btw can you remember the name of his dog ?
No but I can probably find out. Still is a cool character from what I hear, up in Byron I think.
well from memory it was King, but it was many moons ago and happy to stand corrected.
Henry had a modern style, before it was even popular and he drew a certain following trying to emulate it and break away from the more upright traditional style.
Ok BB more nostalgic fun, do you remember Luigi's mum's name?
I should but I don't. I remember her living in that pale brick block of units near the shops but the name has gone. I remember Ken and Jimmy's mum's name though. OK how many others can you identify in the photo? I have Col Steel second from the right.
Dot..as I recall and I think she drove a taxi, which if I am correct, she would have needed to sit on 2 pillows as she was about 4'10"!!
Good call BB, she lived in unit block in Howard Ave Nth Side just east of shops. Co-incidently right where a bunch of DYSF boys rented an old house years later.
I clearly remember Mrs Sasse but forgot her name, got me there!
As for the pic...Well Col for sure, that is easy.
Then, could it be Mumbles and Harry either side of Luigi and Jim Kav (RIP) between the boards?? Maybe dreamin!
The other two are vaguely familiar but you got me on their names!
Something about that pic as territory in those days meant heaps. It is taken next to the old dressing sheds and the crew in it says something to me that maybe either of the Col's could enlighten us.
The heavy cool crew hung in Arthur's or in the cubicles directly opposite. Col is quoted in the story above as being in Crawfords milk bar which was not the cool hang out but was a hang out for the dressing shed less cool crew.
So me thinks pic was taken before those guys (or a few of them) graduated !!
Any thoughts on that little twist BB?

I lived in that house lj with "Dogs" Collins and Glenn Brown. Also briefly, Bill McCausland who went on to found fcs. There's a story there I can't put on line as, even now, I would probably be sued. Mrs. Sasse was Lindy Lou as I recall. I think you are wrong on the other IDs though, the photo was before their time. I would be thinking Greg "Cool" Parker and Henry would be in there but can't pick them. I will find out
Thanks BB, some names there that bring back some memories. Lindy Lou eh, I had no idea on that one but that name really does fit such a colourful character!
Will be interested if you can ID those guys in the pic and I thought the same about 'before their time' but thought it still looked like them.
