Why not have more Hawaiians in the Pipe Masters? What's the problem with making an exception? I reckon the more locals in events like Pipe, Chopes would a great spectacle. Watching Indiginious locals surf there home breaks adds to the drama I reckon....

Professional surfers should have to compete to be invited to the local's events, to prove that they are better than locals even at their home break thereby earning a "professional" wildcard. Flip that card. Narrabeen boardriders local is going to be a tough competition to get into.

Not sure where your coming from Clif. Do professional surfers compete in local events purely based on their professional status?

The Pipe Masters is an ASP event, not a locals surf comp?!? I'm coming from the angle of more locals being allowed to enter ASP events, gaining wild cards etc......sorry if Ive miss understood your take...

So should Torquay locals be allowed to enter Bells, Snapper locals enter Snapper, etc etc? Personally I don't want to watch 'the best locals', I want to watch the best in the world. The argument that Pipe specialists are better is a furphy; a Pipe wildcard hasn't gone beyond the quarters in about ten years.

Also, as has been said above, the Pipe specialists have the Volcom Pipe Pro and the Backdoor Shootout.

Not so sure about that one Stu.

Gavin Gilette (who?) knocked out Parko at Backdoor to eliminate Parko from the title race.

Evan Valiere smoked Owen Wright in perfect ten foot Pipe.

JOB.

No-name locals might not have made it past the quarters/semis etc etc but they've won plenty of big heats, shown plenty of heart and always rise to the occassion.

There's far more Pipe specialists I'd rather watch than the back markers of the Top 34.

Cheers Stu, but will agree to disagree. As I stated it was referring to Pipe & Chopes specifically. I don't really care that no Pipe wildcard hadn't made it thru for 10yrs. You will still see the best as well as local talent that adds to the tension IMO....

make the last event a hard slog on the homeground of surfing. It retains the ASP one last link with surfing's roots while it tramples them everywhere else.

A few upsets is all you need to make it worthwhile viewing. Gives credibility to the mantra of 'local knowledge'.

The Hawaiians are completely deluded with too much testosterone. I'm with Stu on this one, it should be the same as all the others. Eddie is a dinosaur thug and crim, anywhere else he would probably be in a bikie gang selling Ice or locked up. It is only one comp and everybody else has to cop it. Otherwise pull the pin and hold it in indo' somewhere, where the best waves in the world really are. I am really over the whole Hawaiian schtick as I am sure they are over the ASP. It seems to be like the Bra boys or roids. Let them have it and surf somewhere else.

Rabbit after reading Chas's Smith's book on Hawaii (Welcome to Hawaii now get the hell out) it throws a whole new light on how heavy the whole scene is. I remember back when Rabbit got beaten up, he pushed it however he didn't deserve to have the crap beaten out of him. They really come across as a bunch of muscle headed thugs where education is eschewed for thugery. Others on this list probably have a different take on the whole scene (e.g.. Blind Boy) but that sort of localism anywhere really annoys the hell out of me. Eddie isn't even from Hawaii.

I think there is a good argument that the ASP needs Hawaii more than Hawaii needs the ASP. To my mind it is all about "sealing the deal" (slight pause for vomiting). The ASP is aiming to own the whole show including as much of the surfers as they can get away with. Wildcards being successful just reduces the value of their percentage of the surfers they own. Fast Eddie probably speaks for a significant section of Hawaiian opinion. V

I reckon Eddie opitomizes the American side of Hawaiin culture .
He can be the mouth piece , but as bb has said and many others have thought quietly .
The ASP are trying to take hold of Surfing like a corporate giant .... But those tactics don't work so well in the islands ..... Ever since Cook , the outsiders have been overstepping their mark . Although I don't support Eddies bluntness , the message is plain enough .
Indo lacks the raw power of Hawaii . It's gladiatorial , and that's why it produces such stoic figures . Sometimes the Americanism of the culture gets confused with testosterone driven drivel , but many of the chargers are diminutive of stature but. Giants in heart and balls .......
Lopez , Ho , Healey , Diaz , Chapman , Little , Walsh , Sterling ...........
Speak softly and carry a BIG stick .....

I hope that's not your alter ego uppity.....best laugh I've had this week.....as for the Hawaii/Eddie /ASP wildcards issue...ah the reason ASP has to only have 2 wild cards is that every other ASP comp only has 2 wild cards and funny enough...at bells there is a 1 local out of 36....usually one wild card at Snapper form the locals.....and as ASP is a privately owned USA Co....you can't change the rules for Hawaii ...as there could be grounds for litigation if all of a sudden there was a perception that guys whos careers are on the line and world title.....you change the system to accommodate .....wild cards thru any kind of intimidation.....as Eddie has demonstrated.. .....

t potential for a quagmire of legal action..even with 2 wild cards....potentially Medina and Mick could get JOB and ...ist round while potentially Kelly could get ...the lowest ASP seed.....what is fair??

How were the waves and did you surf anywhere near pipeline? I remember talking to an Hawaiian (white) in the Mentawais and he said no problem there generally as long as you don't surf pipe. Your probably right when it is packed with red hot surfers tempers flare. Maybe the ASP should buy the perpetrators a group ticket to another location(s) around the world for the duration of the contest.

I lidded Pipe and various other waves including the west coast over the New Years period a few years back and the locals were super chill. I was even called into a few. Aints was going off which spread a few off the guys off pipe proper.

The west coast has significant problems with crime and homelessness so I'd be careful in a hire car.

Waves were very good.

Waves were good. I got 2 swells while there, only problem was the wind was from the NE most of the time so it was cross-shore at pipe, cross-offshore at sunset with a few offshore or glassy sessions at the right time. I had no trouble at pipe, but I think I got very lucky the first time i surfed it!

It was 8ft+ one morning and so went down to check it (we were staying up at sunset). I sat on the beach for ages trying to convince myself it was worth paddling out as the last few days had been windy and small. This day was windy and big. A few gems came through but the majority was getting toppled over by the cross-shore and making some nasty choppy faces and curtains through the lip. Only about 3 out and not getting much.

Anyway we decided to flag it and get some lunch. Sunset handles the NNE wind much better and it was on the pump, so lots of buzz around there. On the way back up to the house an hour or two later I noticed that sunset was looking super clean, more than it had before. The wind had backed off and swung North!

So I grabbed the stick and fanged it back to pipe on the pushy. Greeted with much cleaner conditions and nobody about (I suspect they checked it and all went home like I did). So I paddled out and Jamie O and about 7 of his mates were hooking into it. There were plenty of waves on offer so I managed to get a few after slowly working my way into the pecking order. But they were friendly and one of them apologised for dropping in on me, everyone hooting when the set came through, so no bad vibes out there. We had it like that for about an hour while the odd surfer would join the line up every 15 mins and by 2:30pm it was 15-20 strong, but quite a spread in terms of the takeoff zone so it was easily manageable.

If pipe was pumping from the morning throughout the day i'm sure my story would have been much different! The Kam Highway was packed in the morning of the swell. Then we did a week in Kauai and it was a different scenario altogether.

Fast eddie... a legend in his own lunchtime....
From what I can gather, and I stand to be corrected, pipe was first ridden by a "white skinned" USA mainlander....
http://www.surfertoday.com/surf-movies/5239-surfing-hollow-days

More "haoles" made the place famous - Jock, John Peck, Butch....

Now whether this history is accurate, I don't know... I can only go on what I have found.... I cannot find any history on Pipe being a sacred place, or a spot that was surfed to prove bravery in pre white man days.... Does anyone out there know more?

I completely agree with the comment above by "the_varsity".

Ok, a few nominations for Pipe.... Shane Dorian, JOB, Mason Ho, Mark Healy, Mikala Jones, Bruce Irons... Seriously, would you rather see them or 85% of the ASP Pros at Pipe???

There are absolute loads and loads of hot local surfers out there who rip but are not on the tour. Why not have a dozen of Hawaii's top pipe surfers in the contest? It sure would make for interesting viewing. Likewise, South Africa's best in J-Bay. The best 12 in Oz in our contests and same for Taihiti and US... Imagine the top 12 Brazilians in 2ft dribble against the Pros, I reckon the Pros would not know what to do.

Heh heh heh... But... Maybe the best 12 in all of Europe in France and Portugal.

I think in Fiji, perhaps just have the Chief's son??

Another factor is that they are having the contest there, locals cant surf while it is on.....

Yeh, Holyfield amasing hey... fuck he loves weights! Always highlights them. The old school hate him!

Oh oh, ooh no... oh dear... what's happening... this is getting out of control... its not my fuckin' fault...

'A fighter who shunned the old-school methods of training, Evander Holyfield instead saw the value of nutritional supplements, fitness experts, and pumping hard iron. During the peak of his career, the Real Deal built a $100,000 gym next to his home and hired a strength and conditioning trainer to add bulk and stamina to Holyfield's repertoire. An emphasis was put on fully utilizing cutting-edge techniques, including a custom-made harness machine to maximize Holyfield's power and endurance. This modern approach, coupled with the champ's obsessive work ethic, resulted in near anatomical perfection.'

'Notable Quote: "I always go to the gyms and watch heavyweights. I'm always casing the gyms because one of those guys may end up wanting to fight me. That is just my competitiveness."

'Former power lifting champion Frederic Hatfield, Ph.D., was brought in to supervise Holyfield's strength and conditioning work prior to his heavyweight world title fight against James "Buster" Douglas in 1990, according to Sportsci.org. With former bodybuilding world champion and eight-time "Mr. Olympia" Lee Haney monitoring his progress, Hatfield introduced a modified bodybuilding and strength program to increase Holyfield's body mass from 208 lbs. to close to 220 lbs.'

'Holyfield's weight training program consisted of easy, moderate and high-intensity sessions, says Sportsci.org. Utilizing a split routine, chest workouts included flat bench press, dumbbell bench press and incline dumbbell bench press. Shoulder workouts included seated dumbbell press, dumbbell front raises and lateral raises. Back workouts included bent-over rows, back extensions and lat pull-downs. Arm work included EZ curls, dumbbell curls, close grip bench press, bar-dips and triceps push-downs. Leg workouts included safety squats, keystone dead-lifts, walking lunges, glute-ham raises, twisting squats and leg curls'

Yesterday blinder, then into the gym. A couple of mates over from Adelaide, to get some help with their backs.

Are you over the 'reduced to quivering jelly' stage now... even though that was extremely basic, low level, beginner stuff that was so foreign to you, and that you struggled so poorly with... or is that a much ruder question?

I'm good uppy, put on some muscle and feel much stronger through the range of motion in my lower body. Baby stuff maybe but it makes a difference and not only on the water, I swing my old AC 30 around easily and that must run to 50kg.
