Jaws from the water
Never mind the drones, the cliff top shots, or even the GoPros, this is the best angle for shooting Jaws, down at sea level among the fray. The angle captures the sheer outrageous magnitude of the waves almost as if you're right there amongst it.
Killer soundtrack too...

By Christ that was a great film! I'm floored by what the big wave guys are doing now. Got chicken skin too after listening to the song - best use of Floyd since Greenough and Echoes?
Far out that was AMAZING!!! Well timed with some classic Floyd.....
The courage to sit out the back in harms way, all the while knowing that a sneaker set is coming at some point. Just incredible.
Watching Jaws (paddle surfed) like that is as good if not better than massive Chopes being towed I reckon.....
No drones - no tows - great music...
So that's how Dorian does it? Couple of bulbs of NOS and he's laughing in the face of danger!
Great vid.
So good. Made towing seem like a thing of the past.
Bloody amazing stuff ....if they can paddle into those mountains why do some need to tow in @ Kirra?
How on earth does one take 400 tonne on the head and then pop out like it ain't no thang? Have physics changed? I am missing something?
Where's Laird????
Where's Visser?
Surfed it that night I believe.
Ha! ;)
Incredible clip. Tow is dead.
That was surf clip !
I know I'm in the minority here but I find Pink Floyd pedestrian and predictable, holy fuck: the surfing was anything but.
Back-dooring that peak is now the new normal.
Tow surfing isn't just dead, it's cremated and ashes scattered to the four corners.
On the angle.
Already sick to death of drone angles which flatten and remove paddling perspective.
That water angle looking back at the peak from deep is maximal and reminds of so many caught insides watching your mate or someone get the tube of their life just as you are about to eat donuts.
Mmmm, not entirely sure there. How big does Jaws handle until it's too big or unridable? I agree that paddle at Jaws will keep growing and towing is somewhat of the past there now, but tow still has it's place at big slabs (ie The Right, Chopes, etc).
Bloody awesome footage though, loved it.
Apparently there is another wave called Phoenix which Laird said he saw at 110 feet. It's in Susan Casey's book if I remember correctly.
Isn't it actually Pyramids? Remember that story well, through the fog breaking outside Peahi.
Tow might still have it's place at mega Chopes but I'd say the tow days are over at Jaws regardless of size. As long as the wind is manageable there's always going to be a posse ready to push the outside of the envelope. You get the feeling those paddle guys have just sighted untouched terrain - call it Foo's Unridden Realm - and are readying themselves to be the first. Rapid advances in equipment and technology are only helping their cause.
Agreed Stu. What is the biggest Jaws has been seen? Does it still handle massive size or does it start closing out? I realize there is a pretty deep channel next too it, but if there is no wind and chop, will it handle massive XXXXXXL?
Either way, I love the paddle footage from the water. That footage from Europe last year and this one. It gives real perspective. And I am amazed by how much shorter some of the guys boards were getting and how late they will turn and paddle. Just putting yourself in that situation at that size is nuts.
I think this is now another bucket list. Sit in the channel and watch the action for big Chopes, and likewise at Jaws.
Egypt is the name of lairds pyramid size wave
Ah, haha, so somewhere in between Mick and I.
Towing isnt dead & when jaws is too big to paddle & windy ) it will get towed they did it last winter for some movie scene & ian walsh rode a behemoth . But as we can see here on this AmAzing clip , so many were brainwashed for years thinking it couldnt be paddled ! But theyre making it look easy here & makung it look like the greatest big paddle wave in the world ( becos its a peak ) . Best clip ive seen for ages im gunna watch it lots .thanks swillnut
The improvements arent just equipment its the fact that theres careers , bwwt , sponsors . Dorian & twiggy , mitchell for example they train like olympic athletes now .its a reinvented sport , its truly a bigtime career if your the best .and it wasnt in the past , not as much anyway
Theres a surf movie where sean collins explains how big it will hold and its very big but not as big as cortes . He gives the rundown on a few of the best big waves and their bathymetry .its a bigwave movie cant rember name
Fricken awesome footage and soundtrack - that's what we want to see!
Caml was the movie -making the call ?
Lopez used to call Jaws - domes, local fisherman named it jaws.
well said Caml...anybody who thinks tow id ead is off their collective head.....the biggest day at Jaws last year by far...was towed and Ian walsh's wave was unpaddleable..and for those who think tow is dead explain to me how you would paddle the right in WA....or Portugul...or....ah the list goes on........
Udo yep that be it . Thanks MC your right
Caml still Avail online @ surfmovies .org -48 mins- jaws stuff around 13mins.
Pink Floyd boring and predictable, hhmmmmm.
SS, do you think that could be something to do with them having recorded that song over 35 years ago.
Pot, meet kettle, kettle, allow me to introduce you to pot. :-)
Anyways, yes, I love the water angle, worth putting on it's own page rather than a link down the comments section.
BTW, Stu and Craig, saw ASMF last night, you guys are regular movie-stars now.
And can I get your autograph next time we meet.
Epic, epic, epic!!! The only blemish: @freeride76's Floyd comments...Shear heresy haha.
Haters gunna hate
Quote from the Rave, Classic stuff ;)
" The great thing is that you have the power to decide. Are you anti this or that, if so, some other will be anti you. See the circular energy circuit. Who are you, who do you decide to be now????? What you give out, you receive. Thoughts, words actions, always come back to their transmitter-you!!!!!!!!!!"
Brutus I agree tow is far from dead but the vibe I was getting from the tow comments above was just how awesome paddling into these waves is/looks rather than tow. Previously we haven't seen guys paddle Jaws that big with so much control & success, only tow, which was awesome too, but the limits are continually not just being pushed but conquered.
Still can't see anyone being able to paddle The Right though. Surely someone's tried by know I would of thought......
This kid gives it a go around the 7 minute mark - vimeo.com/110085141
On a bodyboard, but an attempt nonetheless
Free ride... Most songs are predictable when you've heard them 1000 times....
Uplift, speaking of stewie... Looks like he's been to your gym....
To address your question sheepster, I've never met him. Not that I know of or recall anyway. God knows what cocktail of products he consumes.
Haydos cheers for that link. That's a very solid effort for sure. No matter what you ride at that place its full credit in my books!!
every guy out in the beautiful ocean ,,,giving it a go weather they take a drop or make a drop,,,they will be better for the moments out there ..enjoy our time now love and live.........
