At RSL Beach on Hobart's South Arm a dead whale is being left to decompose naturally. The carcass is on the high tide mark and leaching oil into the sand and surf. Last week a sperm whale died in a mass beaching at Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast though the two events aren't thought to be related.
