Daly Heads NSR wins the inaugural National Surfing Reserve of the Year Award
The team behind the Daly Head NSR were stoked to be awarded the inaugural National Surfing Reserve of the Year Award for 2014.
The National Surfing Reserve committee headed by Professor Andy Short and Brad Farmer had their Annual General Meeting in July. It was decided that each year an award would be given to one NSR group in recognition of their efforts to achieve positive outcomes for their reserve through environmental work and coastal protection at their location.
In the 18 months since we had the Daly Head NSR dedicated a lot has been done, but we continue to set bigger goals to help protect and preserve this fragile coastal zone.
After completing most of the path to Lizards and Baby Daly's in 2013 some further work on these projects is curently in hand.
We have also constructed a path down to the Mysto's surf break in early winter this year, which involved wheel barrowing fifteen tonnes of gravel down the steep cliff face to backfill the wooden steps we have built into the path. It's looking good!
An increasing emphasis has been building partnerships. By working together we have achieved even more! The Bootleg Boardriders, the Yorkes Junior Surf Club and the Corny Point Progress Association have helped us achieve our targets for improving access and protecting our coast. Also students from local schools have been planting many hundreds of seedlings propagated at our nursery.

Our latest goal for the medium term is to work towards the construction of the Salmon Hole Toilets. This will be a big project as we deal with the local council and fundraising challenges to achieve our desire for an amenity that fits into the coastal environment in a low impact way. One idea floated in the committee has been a 'Cactus' style toilet setup with twin spiral rock enclosures under an A- Frame roof? The concept is very much a work in progress.
We would also like to thank Nat Rogers and Che Chorley for donating $1000 from the 2014 Yorkes Charm Calendar sales. A Calendar project for 2015 has commenced.
Finally it's been decided that after the success of our Surfarama this year we will be holding another event in early January 2015 with some great new bands and themes to keep everyone who attends entertained.
We would like to say a special thank you to everyone who assisted us in achieving the results we have over the last 18 months. Your energy and commitment has been fantastic.
Formby Bay Environmental Action Group and the Daly Head NSR committee will continue to 'Kick Goals for our Coast!'

I remember surfing there in the 70's. Vaguely anyway. It was the 70's. Great times, great spots and small crowds. Pondie, Chinamans and Lizards. Dodging the ship ribs at Ethel's.

from the early seventies there. And by the way who is that blow-in above stealing my name?
Love that place. Camped on the hill overlooking Dalys many years ago almost every week back in the early 80's - went back there late last year with my son Tristan. Happy memories..
