Watch: Calypte: A Sailing And Surfing Voyage
'Calypte' is, I think, the sixth film that Torren Martyn and Ishka Folkwell have made for needessentials, so there's a known chemistry there. Expect great waves, big adventure, and layback tube stalls.
Yet where other films were built upon mateship, 'Calypte' is a love story borne upon the seas. Yeah, there's the romanticism of sailing for surf, but the story of mates has evolved into the story of sweethearts.
Yet fear not, grizzled readers, there are enough perfect waves to wonder if AI was somehow involved.
Much more to be said about the film, but right now let's dive into it.

Surprised by the lack of crowds ?
Must have sailed during the off season.
Given he mentions Cyclones nearby in the Indian Ocean appears to be the case.
Long wait between swells to get those perfect uncrowded shots in the off season.
It was shot over 300+ days, you would expect that Banyak's footage was very early season hence why so uncrowded, but while the story is in order, I know the surfing is not as followed him on social media and he didn't go to the area that short Box style right and hollow left with sketchy end section, until much latter in the year, they are waves that often go unridden though as very serious waves.
BTW. Maccas is in there but it was very cleverly shot and edited, the crowd would have just been behind things.
Looking forward to watching this!
Bloody good! As expected
Was wondering when the SN 'launch' was gonna happen.
90 minutes well spent, and yes those righthanders are incredible.
And what an outstanding tuberider Torren is.
I wonder if you watched all his movies and clips and put a stop watch on how long he spends in the tube and add them all up.....he would have to be the most tubed surfer in the world.
Magic. Even my wife, who dies of boredom from anything surf related, enjoyed it.
I'm looking forward to this tonight.
No dogs, otherwise pretty damn perfect.
living every surfers dreams, brilliant
Yet fear not, grizzled readers............!
sums up swellnutters perfectly
Well the bar has been raised pretty high by Needs ....10/10.......great story and excellent filming ... and a love story as well.............
Definitely going to haul out my old tug and service the stern gland after watchin that.
Always love a sailing story and a surfin story to boot.
“Love story” is too much info but woulda been good for those involved . Lol.
Classic scenes watching them learn in Lake Ainsy
I laughed and laughed, and had to show Ms IB.
Good docco just the quality of footage is amazing, they must have had hundreds to thousands of hours of footage.
One things that stood out is they really captures how crazy the weather extremes are in offshore Sumatran Islands which can change very quickly.
Cemerlang!
Spewing I didn't get to see this in a cinema it would have looked really good on the big screen, especially those underwater barrels
Great film, loved it …thanks.
Nice- WWTW = well worth the wait
Cheers for that.
I thought you meant 'watch with the wife'.
I was around one of the areas at the same time and there's no way I would have liked to be sailing in some of the conditions we encountered.Bugger that.....
epic vid , what an adventure
Very good. Loved it!
That was really very good.
Loves it
I love the surfing in the two clips .
Minimal movement ( knees together ) and just going with the flow .
Very easy on my eye(s) .
Just like JJ :) imho .
A 10 , from me .
Haha - I started watching the movie on my lap top and stopped quickly !!!
The Start was soooo Cool !
I was thinking , get going and then " Finally ( lol ) we made it ....."
VERY funny !!!
Will watch it on a Bigger Screen .
It looks a wonderful adventure ( maybe a bit slow for an old bloke :) !
Lovely film and good on them for giving it a go. Having been a long term cruiser myself what I see there is some very Important lessons on how not to do it. And the little disclaimer at the end regarding safety and seaworthiness. That vessel was far from being in fit state for the rigours of long distance cruising. But sometimes you just got to jump in feet first!
Beautiful story and film; told from the heart. Torren's obviously an uber-talented surfer but most of all I loved the way he gave Aiyana top billing for her courage and willingness to embrace the unknown with aplomb. It seemed that they combined to create a higher life. Indeed a third life.
Daddy's yacht... shitload of cash thrown at him by wetsuit company... perfect uncrowded waves... perfect Gidget accompaniment... f#$ken hipsters. Better bloody have counted his blessed life every minute. (Yeah he surfs alright).
