Watch: Jonathan Gubbins // Desert Point Omen
Recently, I watched a video of Clay Marzo and Mason Ho surfing at Desert Point and was tempted to embed it on Swellnet. Two virtuoso tuberiders, both stylish and unique, at one of the world's great waves.
In the end I elected not to run it as the surfing was passable but the waves weren't. The size was underdone for a wave that's often filmed in the six foot range.
Today I was sent this video. Yet another stylish and unique tuberider at Desert Point, and this time the waves provide an appropriate canvas for Johnny Boy Gubbins to practice his single fin-oriented tube style. Front foot up the board and taking the brunt of body weight, back foot barely touching, sometimes only with a toe, knees slightly bent, and right hand aiming to where he wants to go.

Would be nice to have seen some Take Offs and watch him Shuffle forward
Yeah also these vids never show the crowd bunched up in the take off zone. There needs to be a mic in with the crowd to record all the feuds and abuse at each other. The personalities that surf that on big days are backwater savages. Last time I was there I watched a guy throw back 4 longnecks then paddle out and surf the low, this was at 8am in the morning.
Maybe in the crowd some were singing "Jumpin Someone elses train"
[Verse 2]
It's the latest wave
That you've been craving for
The old ideal
Was getting such a bore
Now you're back in line
Going not quite as far
But in half the time
Everyone's happy
They're finally all the same
'Cause everyone's jumping
Everybody else's train
[Chorus]
It won't take you long
To learn the new smile
You'll have to adapt
Or you'll be out of style
It's always the same
You're jumping someone else's train......
The Cure from 1980
The Cure songs were also covered by American noise rock band, honestly called the "Whores"
Thanks for that vid. Was good.
If not for the occasional flash of a head ducking under a wave - you'd be forgiven for thinking that no one ever falls off at that place. Looks so easy - but I have a huge respect for anyone pulling in at that size over there (not that you have any other option....). Falling off there is like 100% guarantee of hitting reef.
Makes me want to go back!!
Pretty soft bottom at deserts compared to other places. Still hurts bouncing off the bottom there though haha
Easiest place to get kegged.. not really into his lines or steez but love watching the wave
I don't get it? Another video of him last year same spot same riding up front style. Is he trying to prove something? Or just get a longer board?
Still think he places his feet too far up on his board and creates a weight distribution which makes the boards he's riding underperform.
Looked like a pretty short board I don’t know how they even get on those beasts
love the nose at the toes...
Looks like a speed washing technique. Rather than outrun and s-turn to stall under the lip. he moves super forward and tempers his speed.
Great edit. Music was spot on.
rides it like a skimboard
It clearly works for him, spends more time under the hood than most. Not sure why he bothers with a tail pad tho.
Loved Desert Pt; took a ferry, bus and bike trip, walked in past the cliff at low tide and saw a Brazilian beauty in a rock pool, with the backdrop of endless perfect tubes.
Didnt like the malaria....or the crowds that have flocked since exposure.
Ive heard that song / soundtrack before .... wayback in 1980.
perhaps the original tune by The Cure was before these musical clones were born.
Sick!
tbb purchased this following Ltd Ed Oz recorded Track on '80 Oz Cure Tour...worth a few bob now...Yew!
Soundtrack by FM Attack; "Seance": Written and recorded by Blake Voss & Shawn Ward live in Vancouver B.C. on Halloween 2021
41 years later.....
The Cure songs were covered by American noise rock band, honestly called the "Whores" ....
don't sell, enjoy
Was that a video lesson on how to get shacked off your head and still look like a kook?
To clarify, I think the guy shreds big time, but I just find is style a bit too odd. Style is a personal thing so take my comments as an entertainment-value comment.
...and to add, the front-end of a surfboard holds mystical powers in the tube if you learn the secretes
Is there a more stylish tuberider than jono?
Check this vid of Chops and Pipe
Watching his back foot unweighting in such critical sections made me fear for him at times.
