Watch: Mason Ho // Periscopes
Though not exactly the same, Sumbawa's Periscopes is as close to a V-Land doppelganger as you'll find in Indonesia. Doesn't have the double-ups, but at size there are steps to navigate and the inside section has a similar bowl.
Mason easily transfers his Velzyland approach to the south coast of Sumbawa.

I'm sure the sponsors are happy enuff
Hes a bit of a crazy cat and I dont like all the sponsor guff....but he has a way of using parts of the wave that is utterly unique and mesmerising. So intuitive and connected. Its pretty amazing.
Spot on man! I I’ve always been amazed bye his natural talent, so fucking awesome to watch and a buzz, just buzz of a guy!
I love his approach. Always looks like he's just playing, having fun. Loose, relaxed, instinctive. Great to watch. Overdoes the sponno stuff.
I read a story that periscopes got its name by someone aquaturding and said turd didn't sink nor float!!!
Not because PK shelfed a large pipe of contraband right there on the sand?
Maybe,weird stuff happens in indo
Even as I see great surfing and an uncanny affinity with the waves and board he looses something by seeming hyper aware of the camera.
Epic original style of surfing. Periscopes can give you a beautiful wave and barrel, but is actually a tricky spot with currents and multiple takeoffs that is very tide dependent. Mason made it look pretty easy.
He is a Shameless Sponsor Slut though. I guess that is where his bread is buttered and we wouldn't see his surfing outside of Hawaii without sponsorship.
Love his surfing, although stopped at the sticker chat. Keep doing what you're doing Bra (Stickers or Not).
My first time there in the early-90s a local told us the land was reshaped a decade or so earlier by a tsunami. Before that, there were paddocks where the wave now breaks, meaning that, unlike other Indo reefs, it hasn't been sculpted by coral growth from below and wave action from above. Hence the irregularities in the wave.
Interesting.
Loved that faint Fela Kuti in the background from 5.15.
Sometimes less is more.
Had to google Fela Kuti. Listening now. Very good.
I remember surfing it around 1993. Turned up in the afternoon on a low tide. Walked out to the reef like doing a pitch inspection. It was nice and flat from memory with no nasty coral heads. Next morning high tide was great.
I’m no shaper but watching that clip I’d say mason wasn’t 100 percent happy with his boards despite what he was saying??
Love Mason's surfing where ever he goes, colourful and charismatic person.Reminds me of the first footage i saw of Periscopes in a Hot Buttered vid called Sultans of Speed, from memory. I think it was filmed before Lakey peak started getting famous too. They lived right near lakeys but i dont think they knew about it, or did and kept it quiet.
