Olympic Surfing Draw Announced
During the recent Tahiti Pro, the ISA announced the draw for the upcoming Paris by way of Teahupoo Olympics.
As the surf delivered, we've got a better handle on which surfers - the CT surfers at least - will be a threat at the Olympics, and with this in mind it's curious to see the names in Heat 4 of the women.
Amongst a raft of little-known surfers, Heat 4 features Caity v Molly v Tati.
If the surf arrives, Tati will go. That much is assured (WSL/Sloane)
Fortunately, the Olympics has adopted the same format as the CT, so the winner will skip a round with the other two having one last chance in Round 2 - otherwise known as the Elimination Round in the CT - before moving on.
This means all three can progress, though two of them will have a harder route to the finals.

There's a ten-day waiting period for the surfing, running from the 27th July to 4th August, with organisers needing between three and four days to finish the event.
Timing is uncertain as, where the Olympics differs from the CT, the heat times can vary greatly. The Technical Director decides heat times, which can run from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, pending conditions.

Late elaboration. There 206 nations in the Olympics and there is definitely not 206 nations competing in the surfing. It wasn’t so much a surfing question, more a how do countries decide what events they’ll enter question (read: silly)
For me surfing at the Olympics is a novelty side show. Bit like golf or tennis. If it weren’t at Chopes I’d not have a skerrick of interest.
It’s a strange choice for an Olympic sport. The elite level tour (CT) is largely comprised of surfers from only three Olympic nations: US, Australia and Brazil.
I’m way more invested in what happens in some of the sports that only get their limelight every few years.
The wave pool is really the best solution for the the Olympics. Boring as fuck but totally level playing field , identical waves for each competitor .
The ocean is not even, every heat gets served up more or less waves than the previous. The Tahiti contest just gone has some good examples of the better surfer losing early due to unlucky consistency or heat draws ( which looking at the Olympic draws is already happening Tati and caity and molly all in one heat.
Personally I can't wait to see some nobody from .......... (insert random country) get nailed at Chopes , it will be a spectacle no doubt but the way to find the best surfer in the world ? The wsl runs pro surfing and they can't even do that right , look who the current world champs are, neither of them will win gold this year in Tahiti.

If you're wondering why the seeding appears all over the place, especially compared to CT seeding (highest vs lowest etc). It's been explained to me by someone who knows, that the ISA did a fairly lacklustre job of telling surfers that the recent ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico was the sole arbiter of their Olympic seeding, and also that the heat draw wouldn't be the same as Tokyo Olympics (it now replicates a CT heat draw).
That's why Round 1 in the Women's has Tati (who's the highest seeded woman - she came second to Sal who didn't qualify), is up against Molly and Caity who both had already qualified and competed without much intensity in Puerto Rico.
The argument being, if they knew it was going to affect seeding all the surfers might've tried to win the ISA Games as it would give them a better shot at the Olympics.
For those saying Matahi Drollet should be representing France/Tahiti, Kauli Vaast is no slouch in big chopes either. Could quite easily be double gold for France (Vahine/Kauli)

Kind of wrong that you can potentially win Olympic gold without doing a turn. Bad call holding it at Teahupoo in my opinion. Too short, left only and too specialist when big to be a fair venue for Olympic medals. But I guess on degree of difficulty it's a winner if big.
Also fair to say you could win gold in Japan without getting a barrel. And maybe if they ever hold it again in Brazil, you could win a gold with close out airs. That's surfing.
For pure spectacle, Teahupoo is the best choice.

All access Land Lock Up Tower is a whole new higher cost beastie to a knock up Reef Shack.
Completely different Build certification with Town hook up utilities & Plumbing & servicing...etc
Think the Rose Estate 2 x Shipping Containers...sounds least productive but least hassle & cost!
Wouldn't take long to run thru the above to see the logistics exceed the Tower Built Cost!
That's why it's handy to have a Tradie on yer Town council...only takes an hour to rule it in or out!
Ok...happy to mop up the Comp Site...so they still got the Tower to Marina delay > lock out...

How’s the forecast looking ? I read that they can expect 4’-6’ and smaller for the waiting period .
First six days of the ten day waiting period. This is the best it's looked but worth keeping in mind it's jumping around a lot.
Guess if we're gonna pick up on trends then it's for a subdued waiting period.
We'll do a more detailed forecast next week when things start becoming clearer.

It was pretty quiet hey. Normally it’s plastered all over the place.
Looking forward to the forecast. Latest model runs look a bit better to me for when the gyre in the Tasman pushes to the other side of NZ. Potential fly in the ointment is the big low drifting down from the tropics, which looks like it could fuck everything up.
Fingers crossed on all fronts that it heads towards the north island.
Sadly unconvinced DP. If i could draw the worst swell map for Chopes, the one in the next fortnight is it. They're lucky they'll get that one decent little one day or so swell in the first week because looking pretty dire after that.
Surely there is hope SR! the fetch east of NZ seems to be settling back into a good pattern and a SE trajectory on the low should only mean a few days of shit winds.
I like it! Definitely some hope there. Alot of moving parts at the moment in the Southern ocean so definitely a possibility things could change quickly. Currently a full sea state down this way.
