WSL partners with Cannabidiol brand cbdMD for Jaws Big Wave Championships
LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Monday, November 4, 2019) - Today, the World Surf League (WSL) announced a new partnership with cbdMD, a nationally recognized consumer cannabidiol (CBD) brand that offers a comprehensive line of 100% natural, hemp-derived CBD oil products. cbdMD will be the official title partner of the Jaws Big Wave Championships for the 2019/2020 Big Wave season.
The official holding period for the WSL Big Wave events opened November 1, 2019, and will run through March 31, 2020. The partnership with cbdMD marks the biggest deal in WSL’s big wave history and WSL’s first-ever CBD sponsorship. This partnership will enable WSL to advance the sport while featuring unique marketing integrations with athlete ambassadors. cbdMD partners with elite athletes across a wide array of sports, including Olympians Kerri Walsh Jennings and Lolo Jones, professional golfer Bubba Watson and more, alongside big wave surfers Makua Rothman and Nathan Florence.
As of January 1, 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances — in or out of competition.

In the men's division, 24 competitors are divided into four heats of six surfers for the first round. Heats are generally 45 minutes and surfers may catch as many waves as they wish with a panel of five judges scoring each ride on a scale of 1 to 10. Each competitor's two best waves are counted, with their best wave score doubled. The three highest-scoring surfers advance to the semifinals, which run in the same format, and the top three from the Semifinals advance to the Final.
The women's division runs in a similar format with 10 competitors participating in two five-surfer Semifinals with the top three surfers in each heat advancing to the Final.
The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge presented by Jogos Santa Casa will feature a unique tow team “expression session” format. Ten two-surfer teams will participate. Within each team, the competitors will both drive the jet ski and surf, with each participant needing to ride at least two waves. There will be four one-hour heats with five teams per heat, each team will participate in two heats, with a priority system indicating which pair has their preferred choice of an incoming wave at any moment. The event will be broadcast live and captured on video from multiple angles. At the conclusion of the competition, a nominating panel will examine the video evidence and select the biggest, best-ridden waves of the day as finalists. At an awards ceremony later in the day, the competitors themselves, along with a group of big wave judges, will review the nominated rides and place their votes in an assortment of categories including Men’s Wave of the Day, Women’s Wave of the Day, and Team Champions.
WSL Big Wave event officials are already monitoring swell producing storms and will continue to watch for the conditions that will produce waves in the 30-to-60-foot range between now and March. Competitors will have 72 hours’ notice to be ready to compete once event organizers call on the event. Updates can be found on WorldSurfLeague.com.

Exciting event structure for Nazare; particularly the way they are inviting feedback from the athletes to determine a winner. And very interesting the way they have nominated just 2 events, separating paddle (Pe'ahi) & tow-in (Nazare); (i imagine) Pe'ahi event focused on critical performance + innovation. With the Nazare event critical performance + wave height. Reads like they're playing the long game? Maybe management have gone of the rails and into the light, fluffy land of herbal recovery. All sounds like progress to me.

Distracted and Freeride, cannabidiol (cbd) and cannabinol (thc)( cbn) are varieties of similar chemicals. They appear in varying quantities and qualities in a variety of natrural plants, and are also produced by the majority of chordate animals ( things with spinal chords). They are involved in a complex system of neuron activation and suppression. We inherited these systems from our common ancestors such as cunjevoi which do have a primitive spinal chord as embryos but lose it in their adult form. They used their system to slow down the natural response to take a drink and close the door as the tide dropped. By slowing down this response the amount of time spent closed up over dropping and low tide was reduced. This limited their risk of dehydration/toxicosis hence death. This was selected for and consequently all subsequent chordates share the system. Humans are born with cbd and cbn receptors on their neurons. Our curious minds remembered those natural sources of cbd and cbn. cbn chemicals are a bit vigorous in their effect which makes them less useful medically. cbd is less vigorous and can be used to suppress certain nerve pathways such as in epilepsy and pain or the message from our stomach brain which tells us we are ok for food which we interpret as being hungry (increased appetite for chemotherapy patients). These are simple explanations. The reality is of course much more complex.

Whilst I'm not sure on the specifics between each product, I wonder if many consumers will be able to differentiate between hemp-derived cannabidiol oil products and cannabis oil? I assume the former has no THC and the latter does - but I don't know the legal status of either (and I'm sure it varies from country to country).
And thus, from a brand/marketing perspective, I imagine there's going to be a fair bit of work required in this space.
The office of drug control has some information. It differentiates between cannabis plant extracts and cannabis seed extracts. The former contains both cbd and thc at varying concentration according to strain. Strain selection is based on market purpose. Plant extracts are classified as drugs and are treated accordingly by national drug laws. This includes hemp oil. Alternatively, hemp seed extracts are not classified as drugs in oz due to their extremely low or non existent levels of thc and cdb. Apparently you can import some hemp seed extracts without licence. One article quoted 0.0075% cbd and 0.005% thc content or less in hemp seed extract as legal limits. The oz legislation was amended to allow for cultivation of cannabis strains with extremely low thc levels and mid range cbd levels under licence for medical and research, but still allows oz to be part of the 'single convention on narcotic drugs'.
