Inaugural Gromtag Australian title on the line at Curl Curl
Australia’s top sixteen Junior Boardriding Clubs will be on show this Saturday at Sydney’s Curl Curl Beach in the Gromtag Australian Championships with the winning Club earning the Title of the countries best Under 18 Boardriding Club.
Elouera Boardriders, Snapper Rocks Surfriders and host Club Curl Curl will go into the Gromtag Australian Championships as the top three seeds but as we have seen throughout the Gromtag Qualifying events anything can happen under the pressure cooker format of tag team surfing.
Local knowledge will play a huge role in regards to wave selection on the day and with a solid south swell predicted for the weekend the young Curl Curl team will be hard to beat on their home beach.
Curl Curl Team Captain Ed Aubrey is looking forward to surfing against all the other clubs from around Australia, “It’s going to be so good having all the different teams at Curl Curl and we are super excited to be competing for an Australian Title”, Aubrey said. “Representing the Curly Boardriders in front of all our friends and family is going to be really special and I hope we can come away with the Title. Tactics and wave selection are going to be important especially if the surf is as big as they are predicting, Curl Curl can be pretty tricky to surf when there’s heaps of water moving around”.

With over forty teams competing in the Inaugural Gromtag Australian Series, Contest Director Steve Harrison is wrapped with the enthusiasm shown by all the surfers and Boardriding Club members at each of the Qualifying events, “the vibe at each of the Qualifiers has been fantastic especially from all the surfers who are stoked to be surfing as part of a team”, Harrison said. “The tag team format really brings club members, family and friends together which is what grass roots surfing is all about”.
Competition will start at 8.00am on Saturday at Curl Curl Beach with the final scheduled for 3.00pm. Heat No.1 will see top seeds Elouera up against North Avalon, Long Reef and Dee Why. Heat No. 2 – Burleigh Heads, North Shelly, North Narrabeen & Mona Vale. Heat No. 3 – Snapper Rocks, Scarborough, Sandon Point & Ulladulla. Heat No. 4 – Curl Curl, Cronulla, Southbridge & Queenscliff.

Not sure why many of the teams and supporters felt the need to stomp all over the dunes. A couple even setting up their tents on the dune side of the path. It's not like the view is any different and there really is plenty of space on the grass and path side of the fence. I've got the same gripe with surfers short cutting running down the dune when there is a path literally every 50 to 10m on weekends.
