World Champ calls in sick
Two-time and current World Champion Tyler Wright hasn't competed on the Championship Tour since Uluwatu back in June.
She pulled out of the following competition, the J'Bay Open, citing a bad case of the flu. Pressed for details, Rip Curl, Wright's sponsor, refused to make a statement.
Wright's case was curious, not just because she was the reigning World Champ and jeopardising her position, but because brother Owen spent a year off the tour for an equally mysterious ailment.
Tyler Wright made the Semifinals at Uluwatu in June. It was the last time she competed.
Since J'Bay, Wright has missed three more events, and a few hours ago she offically withdrew from the last event of the year, the Beachwaver Maui Pro. This time, however, Wright has divulged the reason for her absemce, in fact all of her absences since June.
From Wright's Instagram account:
The WSL today announced that I've withdrawn from the final event of the year in Maui. It's been five months since Influenza A prevented me from competing at J'Bay. Since then, I haven't been able to regain full health and have been diagnosed with Post Viral Syndrome. This means I'm tired (a lot), my body aches and my brain hurts - I'm really not much fun to be around!
It took me awhile to understand what was going on. Other times when I've been sick, I've been able to recover, or to push through it to compete.
I've had great doctors and amazing support from Alex, my family, WSL, Surfing Australia and my sponsors.
There's no clear timeline for recovery but I'm doing what I can to get back to full physical and mental health.
Until then, I'll be reading Harry Potter book and living that sass queen life. All the best to the girls in Maui. Thanks everyone for your understanding and support.
Post Viral Sydnrome is sometimes known as Chronic Fatigue Sydnrome or Overtraining Syndrome as athletes who continually push their bodies past peak health can be prone to it. Recovery time can alter dramatically from person to person.
