A consolatory article for old pricks. I cant totally get aboard the conclusion but the author makes the odd good point.
My musically taste are so stuck in my 20's I'm even going back and digging through that era for new bands or albums mostly on youtube.
I try to get into new music/bands but i often find there is aspects i like but always aspects i don't like.
Also now there is just to much to trawl through, back before the internet the only way to find out about good music was through a friend, from a surf or skate video or mag, rage, or just going to an indie record store and taking a punt, or from seeing a band, normally a support act.
Now it's way too easy to click on a band on the net and go yay or nay after 3 seconds.

Funny you posted that Stu, i came across this the other week and can't stop watching Cure vids.
This is pretty cool, so early the arrangement and lyrics are different.

Blowin I think it is hard to go past some of Leonard Cohen's songs if you are looking for that combination of poetic lyrics and a memorable melody. Despite it being over-exposed "Hallelujah" is still a mighty piece of work. "Chelsea Hotel#2" is another masterpiece. "Bird on a Wire" also. In a different genre I rate Amy Winehouse very highly. "Back to Black" has that essential honesty of all great work. Then there's Tom Waits, too many great songs to even start the list. And yes, I am old enough to nominate Van Morrison "Astral Weeks" and " It's Too Late To Stop Now" or even further back a whole string of early songs by The Animals. Oh shit then there is all the Motown stuff from The Four Tops, early Stevie Wonder, Mavin Gaye, I mean "What's Going On" sounds as good and is just as relevant as the day it was released. " California Uber Alles" "Holiday In Cambodia" DKs "Life On Mars" most of "Young Americans" David Bowie, "In Between Days" "Just like Heaven" The Cure. Coming forward, a stack of Pixies songs, "Sober" by Tool, Lard, Ministry, DOA, Iggy Pop, pretty much everything by The Drones, Frank Black in various combinations. Nick Cave " Tupelo" " The Mercy Seat" the whole William Crighton album. Son House, Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf......should I go on?

I had a big day with our Indian mates today. Had a grand final feel about it , for sure . A few dollars riding on a successful rocket launch and satellite deployment with a sub continental take off.
A live video feed that looked like it was a brown skinned out take from revenge of the nerds. All pocket pens and wispy facial hair. Fuckers got the job done alright.

I know I'm going to sound like one of those too cool for school kids, but it sucks sometimes when you get into a band when they are not well known and then they blow up and end up playing big stadium type gigs.
I got into Queens of the Stone age as was a Kyuss fan so bought their spilt Album and then saw them thew first time they came out to Australia.
It was at the Prince of wales in St Kilda, Magic dirt supported them and played an amazing set as played more of their heavier tunes and left out all the more poppy stuff.
Q.O.T.S.A were also good i like their first Album the best and they played mostly those songs and a few from Rated R which had just come out.
Not quite in the same league Indo but I saw Powderfinger play one of their first gigs at the Spring Hill Hotel and thought to myself, these guys are gonna go on to bigger and better things.
Saw Nirvana supporting the Femmes at Fishos years ago, that was a pretty cool day.
I reckon I have seen 90% of these bands live during my youth.......great times and memories

Too cool for school cont'd...I bought Superfuzz Bigmuff in '89 a few years before the whole thing broke wide open. My copy wasn't even licensed domestically, it's a Sub Pop import. I then saw Mudhoney in 1990, again before there was an inkling of what was to come.
Used to really like the Sugarcubes and saw them at the Enmore in about '88 or '89. Bjork owning the room and despite all the subsequent successes I still think Birthday is my fave song of hers.
Bug-era Dinosaur jr at the Kardomah Cafe and J Mascis didn't fucken sing the circular refrain at the end of Freak Scenes - "Sometimes I don't thrill you.." etc - which I recall pissing me off, though I also recall them introducing their new single, The Wagon. A year or two later they could fill the Kardomah ten times over.
While it was happening the whole grunge thing was a bit of a downer for me, coming as it did with mainstream crossover, 2JJJ going national, and all the people I tried to create some distance from suddenly listening to the same music. I know it's supposed to be "just about the music" but that's bollocks really, the culture and values surrounding art are equally as important and they got horribly watered down in the vanilla tide. Lotta lessons got learnt in that time.
Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.
Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.
