Southern Tasmania Forecast (issued Monday 10th February)
Best Days: Wednesday afternoon through Sunday morning
Recap
Saturday started off tiny but a small increase in long-range SW groundswell was seen during the afternoon but sea breezes created average conditions. Sunday offer better conditions with a small easing swell under N/NE winds favouring exposed locations around the South Arm.
Today we're back to a tiny 1ft under offshore winds.
This week and weekend (Mar 10 - 16)
The forecast for this week is active, but each swell will be from the W/SW and initially with not much size at all.
The Long Wave Trough is currently positioned over south-west WA and will move slowly east and stall in the Bight during the middle to end of this week.
This will steer polar fronts up towards WA and then south of the Bight through our western swell window. The initial activity will be too far north and only produce a small and inconsistent 1-2ft of swell through Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.
Into the second half of this week, secondary frontal activity will aim a better aligned and elongated fetch of W/SW gales through our swell window, generating a better pulse of W/SW groundswell for Friday afternoon, reaching 2-3ft across Clifton.
This swell will then fade Saturday with a final smaller reinforcing W/SW groundswell pulse due Sunday to 1-2ft.
Now winds will be favourable through Wednesday and Thursday and generally from the W/NW (NW Thursday morning), while Friday looks excellent with N/NE tending NE winds.
Next week onwards (Mar 8 onwards)
A couple of more favourably aligned SW groundswells are due next week but winds may not be as favourable as this week. We'll review this Wednesday though.
