Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 1st January)
Best Days: Thursday morning
Recap
Happy New Year! A secondary pulse of S'ly groundswell in the wake of Monday's windswell kept solid 3ft+ waves hitting south facing beaches yesterday with variable winds during the morning ahead of a shallow SE change.
Today the swell was continuing above expectations with light NE winds that will freshen from the day.
This week (Jan 2 – Jan 3)
Today's S'ly swell will fade back through tomorrow while a small NE windswell should be in the mix from strong afternoon and evening NE sea breezes.
Friday's S'ly swell has unfortunately been downgraded with the strong cold front pushing across Tassie not being as favourable as expected on Monday. Only a small increase in size is now due Friday afternoon with variable tending fresh E/NE winds.
This weekend onwards (Jan 4 onwards)
A cold front pushing up the coast Saturday will bring with it a weak increase in windswell Saturday with poor winds before easing off through Sunday. Winds will remain poor into Sunday though with a lingering onshore E'ly wind that'll freshen from the NE during the day.
There's plenty of S'ly swell on the cards for next week as a series of strong cold fronts are steered up through our swell window. We'll review the finer details revolving around this on Friday.
