What's what?
Sorry mate , can't recall any specifics.
who says we lack culture.
having a good laugh at yourself is a kind of culture in itself.
lack of values? dunno who said that but cant disagree more. we have a legal system implementing the very values that we consider define this country.
mk1 wrote:Lack of an healthy inclusive culture andym, being Australian can mean a lot of good things but there isn't a healthy dominant narrative we subscribe to. Take the french ideals of liberty and and the support for french culture they carry, how its rude to ignore other people in shops, cafes, bars etc due to the impact of the revolution driving a need for respect for every person. Or the Asians society cohesiveness and respect for elders. Australia is a bit of a hodge podge of ideas, cultures, values and just as likely lack thereof. Drink gambling depression, anti social behavior, I don't blame anyone, its the history we inherited and I think it's going to take a long time till we develop something more mature. Still an amazing country :)
Can't say I disagree with any of this mk1. I love Australia to bits and our coastal lifestyle is the envy of the world, it's ridiculously good. Having said that, coming back from Europe in particular, Australia's youth and lack of sophistication becomes really apparent. Double edged sword because we're so relaxed and casual but as you say, we've yet to establish a positive dominant narrative.
It frustrates the hell out of me that we haven't developed what I see as being a true pride in our country. Much more than older countries which have had longer to develop a stronger culture (prior to the influence of the Internet), Australians seem to be suckers for whatever is thrown at them culturally by the U.S..
People bitch about the French but I wish Australia was as proud of it's history, culture and language so as to tell the rest of the world to go and choke on one. Wouldn't that be good.
It's tough AndyM, these notions of culture, pride, beliefs are ephemeral. Picking up the culture of other countries is kind of understandable given our young culture and fragmented society. There isn't much more that I can say except re-iterate that it's not anyone's fault, just the story of a young country dealt a difficult hand and slowly finding its feet.
Bring on the republic, a new flag and a new Australian celebration date, it's time Australia grew out of it's messy teenage years.

Still suffering from that old projection, hey Blowie?
Agree SB. Brock Little - a big man in many ways.
I was spun out when I heard the news this morning. I remember him, Ross Williams and I think Aaron Napolean charging Waimea as teenagaers all those years ago. I think Brock might have been one of the first to get seriously tubed there.
Hang in there mate.
Brock Little, 18, in the '87 Eddie. Board was 8ft long.
Nice one Stu, i so remember this.
I always felt he was a man with a sense of humour and a keen sense of the ridiculous. A smart-ass who, along with Chesser, took the piss out of, goaded, cajoled, and inspired the young Slater, Dorian and the like to go big and bigger in Hawaii.
Hope you can pull out of this one, mate.

"The first murder was claimed by a group purporting to be the Continuity IRA, a dissident republican splinter faction, but that drew scepticism from detectives immersed in gangland investigations.
In a statement the Garda press office said: "Gardai are aware of the recent statement to the media and are keeping an open mind in relation to the criminal groups involved as part of their investigations."
Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald issued a statement after the attack, urging any members of gangs that fear for their safety to come forward to Gardai.
She said: "Tonight's fatal shooting in Dublin is another deplorable example of the ruthlessness of gangland criminals. It seems that some gangs are intent on waging a feud where human life counts for nothing."
Backwaters of USA today.. The natural reading environment for most Aussies..........
""Tonight's fatal shooting in Dublin is another deplorable example of the ruthlessness of gangland criminals."
Sorry... it's ok..... Not terrorism.... Gangland criminals..... Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald make me feel fuzzy warm and safe then.... Nothing to see here... Move on...
News just in!!!!! Teenager found with ISIS flag!!!! Terror level lifted to extreme!!! ;)
And that shats, was the reason i posted it.... Imagine the world headlines if this catholic terrorist attack had've been a muslim terrorist attack....
Be alert.... Not alarmed.... lol
Floyd.... Continuing on re' Essendon....
Maaaaaaaan..... i feel ya pain..... I honestly do..... The amount of crap we at the Saints copped with the whole "sex scandal" thing was a notch or 2 down on what you are copping, but nonetheless it fucked our club.... I honestly believe the whole milney thing derailed our 2010 finals.... Ch9 wouldn't leave it alone, saying there was a cover up.... Eddie would've loved it.... (funny how hush hush the current pie sec scandal is aye)....
From there we went rapidly downhill.... It's only since the poor scapegoat milney retired that the saints have started to claw back.... A long fucking road.... So yeah man.... I get your pain.... But asking milney to retire probably a year earlier than he needed to was the only way out... Unfair? Fuckn oath!!! People now think of milney as some sort of sex criminal... But it happened in 2004... He was a kid..... 2 guys and 2 chicks at one of the guys place - getting funky - and it gets bit messy.... Shit can happen with partner swaps.....
Now.... Seeings you know that I get what you are going through, and I honestly think the dons supporters dont deserve this shit, here's my take.... You dons supporters have to turn your anger at your clubs admin... Yeah most of them are gone... But they caused this shit..... A riot and lynchings are in order....
How the fuck do "records" go "missing", mate? How the fuck does this happen? If it was the Libs, you'd be calling for blood...... And............ On a scientific level, if one is injecting players on a daily or weekly basis to improve whatever, records would be strictly kept to monitor the players improvement , whether it be in stamina, or muscle mass etc etc etc... Different players would have slightly different regimes... This is sports science..... For their to be absolutely no records of these injection regimes either means it wasnt science, but some sort of injecting free for all with legal substances and about as far away from "sports science" as one can get..... Or,,,, the records were destroyed because it would show guilt....
Now... The players...... They deliberately omitted the injections in compulsory forms that had to be filled... 33 of the 34 players listed every nurofen, every asthma puffer, every bloody medical substance or drug they put in their bodies, but did not list ONE INJECTION........ MAAAAAAAATE......... WTF.......
Placing myself in the position of an Essendon member for a minute, I'd be organizing a faction, and I'd be black banning everyone who had anything to do with the whole sordid affair... That includes James Hird... If Reid is still the doctor, I'd ask him to step away..... I'd start from scratch... I'd do "whatever it takes" to get this embarrassment in the rear view mirror..... lol

Donald Horne's quote has never been more appropriate than now. I have to disagree, Donald Horne's quote is anything other than dribble.
Your love letter to Australia was nice and all, but a little soft around the edges. We do well, very well, in many fields, but if your analysis is based on a comparison with other countries then perhaps you just aren't setting the bar high enough.
Probably where we lead the world is in our success at multi-culturalism. On all the other wonderful measures you cite, I could equally argue against them as either a little fantastic, or just setting a very low bar.
I love our country, but not our politics. I love our geography, but not the way that we exploit it for such little gain. I celebrate our freedoms, and rail against that fact that they are being taken away without a whimper. I love our equality and lack of rigid class structures, and lament that it mostly exists in our minds more than in reality.
I love that we came from a convict settlement, but don't like that we stole the country from the original inhabitants. It could have been worse though, we could have been religious nutters, a la USA.
Mostly, I love that Australia used to be proud to be not proud of the country, used to love that we didn't fly flags and make patriotism a virtue.
But that place is gone, and I suspect forever.
That's a big loss. What we thought was a weakness was our great strength.
And appeals to national fervour now actually gain traction, rather than finding the standard rejoinder of my teenage years, 'wanker'.
Feel free to disagree, there's a huge amount of room for differing opinions.
I think your right BF....it was Howard who whipped up the bogan sentiment....
Look at what the muslims have done now!!!! They're poisoning our water!!!!! Whoops!!!! Sorry.... It's just an energy company.... Nothing to see here..... Move on, people...

Sheepster, can't and will not argue about anything you're saying about Essendon. But why stop there? The AFL, Dank, the Age/C Wilson, ASADA, WADA and CAS equally all have questions to answer. Sure I'm an Essendon supporter but I want all the facts to come out because I like proper process and we didn't get it. Apparently Dank will be calling former senior people at Essendon to the witness box regarding this issue of records, because they existed at the cub but have been destroyed. Why? This maybe bullshit so we will have to wait and see. Just like Milne was trialled by the media so was Hird; he may have been trusting, a poor coach, whatever, but never will I believe he deliberately set out to cheat the system, its a bloody mess but lets see all the facts come out.

C'mon Floyd, even though this "bloody mess" drags on into its fifth year, I reckon it's time you Bombers supporters moved forward & embraced a fresh start along with your new tried & tested coach.
It time to........

G'day blowin,
I have to say that I took you for a more intelligent contributor than that.
You didn't read the article, just the headline, which the journalist doesn't write (you may not have been aware of that).
The headline is written by the sub-editors, and basically they have written a headline for clickbait purposes.
Feel the venom? There wasn't any, just a discourse on economic theory.
Jealous bitch? Harsh call, and not remotely related to the article.
Was I wrong in thinking you were a reasonably intelligent contributor?

Yes it is an interesting read. There are a few points which are questionable. I suggest that this piece is mainly an opinion rather than based on extensive research. Eg , 'medical specialists' - what group is that -AMA ? Then add 'administrators' - what group is that.
Interestingly, there does seem to be a larger wealth divide in Europe. Agree with the favours developers tend to get. Yes, we know about these. Will council mergers address this - it is supposed to.

I do notice that since the extreme inequality statistics in the west came to light over the last 2 years the narrative around fairness, capitalism and taxation has changed considerably. It feels like the occupy movement went underground for a while and has now become a mainstream undercurrent. Bernie and Corbyn being highly visible representations of this but also in the lack of "tough love & free markets" comments online. I'm liking it!
