Hail Mary....Jane.
I'm for a legalisation and home grown. If it becomes like tobacco with licensed growers only and government mandated pricing and tax etc. :(
Wow thats an interesting way to look at it Blowin.
Personally i don't care what they do but it makes sense to legalise and tax it somehow.
I personally don't enjoy getting stoned never really have, but i do love growing it for many of the joys Blowin has pointed out but haven't grown it for a long time, but if it was legal i think id grow it just for fun again and sell it or give it away, i guess if it was legal it wouldn't be worth half as much though, but its such a beautiful plant and i love the smell of it.
This "legalize it" argument has been going on since the days of Dupont... A brief legalization for the war effort - great stuff for parachutes.... But cotton and plastics rule... patents and megabucks.... the big end of town..... And if all drugs a legalized, including herion and ice etc, treated as a medical issue and not a law issue, what the fuck will the criminal gangs trade in? There' will always be crime and criminal gangs... What becomes the new "street currency"? Will extortion rise? Car jackings? Will cyber crime, identity theft, blackmail, and common garden variety break and enters do through the roof? Or will theses other issues be easily dealt with due to addiction no longer feeding the crime scene?
The underbelly will still be there... But what will they do? Only one way to find out....
Id say its more security issues Blowin not too many people to rip it off out there and if they do much easier to work out who and track it down.
Pretty crazy though in Tassie they grow medical grade opium in open fields with nothing more than a normal barb wire fence or normal electric fence.

How can it possibly be conceivable that it's illegal to grow your own tobacco ?
As far as i heard, its a $$$ 60 000 $$$ fine for each tobacco plant. Ridiculous.
Colorado seem to be doing well out of both medical marijuana and recreational use being legal.
But if the Aus government is going to do it like tobacco, where you cant grow your own and get massive fines for doing so i thin it will be a greedy mistake.
By the way COB leds are the future of growing. I use them for chillies and they beat HPS lighting hands down.
If used on weed (which i dont smoke or grow anymore-and wont unless its legal) you can get very good results.
But growing weed makes me paranoid. Too much stress for the small amount of money you might make, (unless going big then its much more paranoia and risk...)then you have rip offs, scabs and break ins etc. Just not an enjoyable alternative to working imo.
Heres one idea for legalization of medical cannabis and how it could be sourced, rather than sourced by the government on Christmas island etc.
1) if you want to be a producer, you do a TAFE like coarse on botany and cannabis to teach the best way to grow safe stuff, harness the oils etc no harmful chemicals used, in the end you gain a license to look after a certain number of patients. Say a maximum of 5-10 patients per person.
2)Once licence is granted you can grow a certain amount of grams per patient every two to three months (depending if you have perpetual setup or not).
3)Officials will occasionally check on each grower to make sure they have the right number of plants or setup that allows for that certain amount. Also they check nutrients you use to make sure you are not using toxic harmful chemicals such as "x-plode".
Organic nutrients preferred, Indica varieties only.
This could make less people wanting to live in cities as people passionate about this sort of thing can live in remote areas away from cities, taking stress away from city roads and populations, give employment to a lot of people who know what they are doing.
As long as the TAFE like coarse are teaching the right things.
I dont know its just a thought, but again security could be a concern. Im not sure if this is the way it works in the USA but i think its something similar.I dont know how they get authority to grow but i think it should be made fairly hard in Australia.
The proposed sourcing of cannabis for medicinal use is not from Christmas Island. Certainly, as mentioned, the sourcing is highly controlled, as is the medicinal processing.
right on, blowin! i agree with every word you said.
i can score good-quality pot whenever i want. i've never even come close to being busted for smoking a joint. legalisation offers me nothing.
it would only restrict my access to weed and, as you say, put people out of work.

They might have changed their mind but these articles claim West oz government are thinking of Christmas island as its source of cannabis oil.
The first one has complaints from locals on Christmas island while also claiming it will give employment to locals.

That was cool and kinda sad in a dystopian sort of way.
The government just commissioned an audit into the tax intake , in the form of GST, if marijuana was to be legalised.
$300,000,000.00/ year was the amount discussed.
So I'd say that is a fair indication of the direction that the nation will take in regards to the decriminalisation / legalisation of mull.
About time too.....or is it ?
Is the legalisation of marijuana in the nation's best interest ?
Personally I'd say no.
The profits generated by the sale of marijuana are distributed widely across the Australian economy, marijuana cultivation is extremely decentralised and the spread of profits is egalitarian and across all strata of society - think Coastal bush growers, inner city hydro propogaters, industrial agribusiness operations through out the near interior, top end wetlands cultivators.
The spread of opportunity for the average Australian punter with limited employment potential due to societal / regional / educational reasons to generate substantial income that is more often than not redistributed in their immediate area through retail and service procurement , re employment of other members of the community ( manicurers / distributers ) and reinvestment through rural cooperatives etc to provide for the following years crop.
That's not even touching on the spending proclivities of your average drug dealer who are traditionally not averse to spending up big on toys and good times.
I'd go as far as to say that many regional areas are sustained and have been for many years by a combination of marijuana production and tourism.
And when the tourists are buying mull, well that's a nice little synergy isn't it?
So with the legalisation and acceptance of mull as another commodity , a very valuable commodity, it will be a short journey to the total commercialisation and usurpation of this pleasant little cottage industry into yet another corporate dominated industry with the benefits to regional areas reduced to the sub survival standard of wages / piece work currently demonstrated by the fruit industry- an industry that locals in regional areas reject in droves and labour is mainly outsourced to desperate immigrants lured with the carrot of residency and backpackers looking to extend their visa to enable themselves more opportunities to drop in on each other on soft tops at The Pass.
At present a minority, a very small minority, of growers are caught by the law and subject to the ridiculous punishments metered out by the courts, but.....I believe this is a small price to pay for the preservation of what is practically the last profitable cottage industry in Australia .
