Around the world there are a handful of rivers that offer the chance to ride kilometre long, thigh-burning waves at particular times of the year. The waves are not a result of wind blowing over water, however, but a combination of a large tidal ranges and ideal river contours.
Not content with watching it on Red Bull videos and reading about it in mags, Victorian surfer, Skeeta Derham, recently travelled to Brazil to surf the Pororoca in the Amazon River. The Pororoca - which means 'loud roar' in Tupi - is a tidal bore that pushes up the Amazon on the largest tidal phases.
The Pororoca causes destruction along the river banks as it roars up the river. Testament to its power was the huge ocean buoy that Skeeta and crew found washed up in the jungle 18 kilometres from the mouth of the river (see the last photo).
