Western Tension

OK, we can hear the grumblings from over here. For the last few weeks - hell, probably the last few months - West Oz has been getting pumped by swell yet what have you seen on Swellnet - not much since the big Drug Pro went down at Margies. So then, this is our meagre attempt to bring some parity to the party. Clean lines and slick moves in and around Perth with all photos taken by local snapper, Mike Maxted.

PS: That's Luke Campbell swingin' from the rafters.

Flash in the Night

Perth surfers, Luke Campbell and Marc Lee, along with photographer, Mike Maxted, scarf their carrot sticks, squint their eyes and head out into the night for an uncrowded hi-per session on the Perth beachies.

The Literal Zone

From a session last month...

Hippo, Mark Mathews, Richie Vass and Laurie Towner get stuck into a wave of unbelievable dimensions but unimaginative title. A wave with a name as blunt and literal as the rocks underneath.

The 1-2 Combination

Last Friday we ran a session, Punching above it's weight, that warned of the perils of dismissing the Perth beachies. Just when you call bullshit they'll swing a right, such as the one shown in those pictures, and knock you down a peg.

Turns out it wasn't a one hit wonder either. Here's some shots that Mike Maxted took, also from the Perth beachies, of a knockout left. A great combination from an overlooked stretch of coast.

Punching above its weight

It's an often-maligned surfing destination is Perth. With islands that block swell, beaches that closeout, and one of the world's best big wave destinations just three hours south, the Perth surfer must be patient and keen. Those that are, however, can get rewarded with the odd knockout session. Such as Luke Campbell here, getting horribly pitted across the front of Mike Maxted's lens yesterday. //STU NETTLE

Too Many Barrels

Contrary to popular belief there is such a thing as too many barrels, a Swellnet reader told us the surprising news this morning via Facebook. Shamed and embarrassed, we promise to run fewer barrels in the future.

But for now here are some hefty kegs from a killer session that went down in West Oz last Friday. Brad Norris, Lee Devereaux and Mitchell Thompson in the pit, Mike Maxted behind the lens.

Apologies From Afar

On behalf of all East Coast surfers I'd like to extend an apology to the rest of Australia for ignoring you these past few weeks.

You see, it's been pumping over here and...well, you know how self-involved us big city surfers are. Yes, I'm aware that Vicco has had the odd wave break on its shores during the same timeframe. Tassie too. Hell, even the West Oz metro beaches, where these shots by Mike Maxted were taken, has had good waves! But you'd hardly know it by looking at Swellnet.

The Green Flash

Higher frequency light (greens and blues) curves more than lower frequency light (reds and yellows) so the greens are left visible after the sun has set. Yeah, there's that, or there's Trigg's Marc Lee flaring up in his bright green hat. All photos by Mike Maxted.//STUART NETTLE
