Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 3rd August)

Best Days: Protected spots tomorrow and Wednesday, Thursday through Saturday

Recap

Pumping waves on Saturday across all locations with clean 8ft sets across the South West, 2-3ft across Mandurah and 2ft in Perth. A new larger swell filled in yesterday but with lumpy conditions across the South West, great in Mandurah and Perth again with sets to 3ft and 2-3ft respectively.

Today conditions have improved all day across the South West with a large SW groundswell to 8ft to occasionally 10ft, 3ft across Mandurah and 2-3ft in Perth. The varying winds across the southern region of the state are due to a deep low pressure system, bringing rain in from it's northern arm.

This week and weekend (Aug 4 - 9)

As touched on in Friday's update, the low that's currently sitting immediately south-west of us will influence our winds for the coming days, with it due to push north through tomorrow.

This will bring SE-S/SE winds to the South-West, fresher S/SE across Perth and Mandurah. A rapid drop in swell from today is expected, likely on the tiny side in Perth, small across Mandurah and easing from 4-5ft across the South West.

Wednesday will see winds ease in strength but persist out of the SE-S/SE along with a large, long-period and building W/SW groundswell.

This swell was generated late last week and on the weekend by a strong mid-latitude low moving through the southern Indian Ocean. The low has maintained its strength while moving into our south-western swell window and should produce a secondary reinforcing SW groundswell for Thursday.

Size wise we should see the South West building to 8-10ft, 3ft in Mandurah and 2-3ft in Perth.

Thursday and Friday look the pick though with the large reinforcing SW groundswell possibly offering the odd bigger bomb set across all locations Thursday morning as winds swing offshore out of the E/NE tending E/SE across the South West, and E/SE-SE to the north.

Friday should then see moderate to fresh E/NE tending variable winds as the swell eases.

Moving into the weekend and a new long-period SW groundswell should build Saturday, produced by a strong polar low firing up west of the Heard Island region today. A fetch of pre-frontal W/NW gales will be followed by W/SW gales, generating a moderate sized groundswell that should peak Saturday to 6ft to possibly 8ft in the South West, 2ft+ across Mandurah and 2ft on the sets in Perth.

Winds will strengthen from the E/NE-NE, possibly reaching gale-force from the NE Sunday as broad and significant mid-latitude low starts edging in from the west.

This system looks as if it will bring an onshore W/NW swell early next week, but more on this Wednesday.
