This week and weekend (Jan 31 – Feb 3)
Moving into the end of the week, we'll see the surf continuing to ease but winds will swing more offshore for swell magnets in the South West with an E/NE breeze tomorrow morning ahead of afternoon sea breezes. Surf wise we'll be looking at easing 3ft+ waves, tiny in Mandurah and Perth.
Friday will be smaller again and conditions OK but not great with a morning SE breeze ahead of a S/SW change.
Our new SW groundswell for Saturday is still on track, with it being more prolonged than forecast on Monday, with a secondary pulse due into Tuesday.
The weekend's swell is being generated by a low that's currently strengthening east of Heard Island, with a fetch of gale-force W/SW winds due to move very slowly east, weakening very slowly into the end of the week as the low tracks slowly east-northeast.
The slow moving nature of the low will help produce waves all weekend, with an initial long-period increase in size due Saturday, with the South West building to 6ft through the afternoon (if not for the odd bigger cleanup on dark), 2ft in Mandurah and 1-1.5ft in Perth, easing from a similar size Sunday morning.
Winds will be average Saturday and out of the S tending S/SW, but Sunday looks much better with a morning SE offshore ahead of sea breezes. Monday will be great with an E/SE offshore and easing 3-5ft sets across the South West.
Tuesday's swell will be produced by another polar low but this will form later in our swell window, move quicker and not be as intense. As a result a smaller S/SW swell is due to fill in Tuesday, boosting the South West back to 4ft or so on the sets with a morning offshore. Longer term there's nothing too significant on the cards so make the most of the fun clean waves expected this period.
