Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This weekend and next week (Jan 12 – 18)

As touched on in the last couple of Forecaster Notes a small mix of background swells this afternoon and tomorrow don't look to top 3ft across the South West, tiny in Perth and Mandurah.

A light S/SE-SE breeze will create OK conditions for desperate surfers tomorrow before sea breezes kick in.

Our new SW groundswell for Sunday afternoon is still on track, with a strong frontal system currently forming between us and Heard Island. An elongated fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds will be produced, with an embedded low generating a tight fetch of severe-gales.

The swell should build rapidly Sunday and reach an easy 6ft across Margs into the afternoon, 2-3ft in Mandurah and 2ft in Perth.

Winds are an issue though with a moderate to fresh S'ly breeze due across all locations Sunday morning (S/SW around Margs) with afternoon sea breezes spoiling conditions in Perth and Mandurah through the afternoon. Margs should see winds tend S/SE into the evening, cleaning up protected spots.

The swell is expected to back off a touch Monday while tending more W/SW in direction owing to the swell from the tail of the elongated fetch filling in.

Margs should offer 4-6ft waves most of Monday, with 2-3ft sets in Mandurah (2ft Perth) along with better SE winds across all locations.

Tuesday is looking a little dicier now as winds revert back to the S/SE ahead of afternoon sea breezes.

Into the end of the week a weak mid-latitude front is forecast to push into the state and this will bring onshore winds along with a weak increase in mid-period SW swell.

As the swell eases winds will improve but there doesn't look to be much size or energy left in the tank.

Longer term we may see some better SW groundswell energy into the week starting the 21st, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
