Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 5th November)

Best Days: Keen surfers protected spots Mandurah and Perth early tomorrow, Wednesday, South West magnets Friday and Sunday mornings

Recap

A period of pumping waves across Margs on Saturday with the wind coming in better than expected before reverting back to the SW. Friday's swell eased back from 5-6ft, while Mandurah was a lumpy 2-3ft with the S'ly wind, cleaner and 2ft yesterday.

Perth was a lumpy 2ft on Saturday as well, cleaner Sunday but tiny.

Today onshore winds are in everywhere along with a building S/SW groundswell that should reach 10ft across the South West this afternoon, 3ft in Mandurah and 2-3ft in Perth.

Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This week and weekend (Sep 6 – 11)

This afternoon's large S/SW groundswell was produced by a vigorous polar low over the weekend, generating a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW-SW winds in our southern swell window.

A cold front spawning off the backside of the low is currently aiming an additional fetch of SW gales towards us and this is a touch stronger than forecast on Friday.

This will produce an additional mid-period SW swell to the mix of large long-period S/SW groundswell tomorrow, with both due to ease through the day.

We should see easing 8-10ft sets across the South West swell magnets, 3ft in Mandurah and 2-3ft in Perth, but the intensification of the current front will see winds remain onshore and fresh from the S/SW across Margs, with a period of early S/SE winds further north.

Wednesday looks the best with an E/NE offshore, tending variable before swinging back SW mid-afternoon. Margs will be the go with easing 6ft sets, 2ft+ in Mandurah and 2ft in Perth.

Thursday will be smaller again (3-4ft Margs), tiny to the north and a SE wind should open a few options for keen surfers across the South West.

A weak mid-period SW swell is likely Friday, but to no major size, generated by a weak front moving in through the south-east Indian Ocean over the coming days.

Margs may see 3ft to occasionally 4ft sets with a fresh morning SE breeze, with tiny waves further north.

The weekend looks to remain on the small side but it won't go flat, with weak persistent fronts through our south-western swell window due to generate mid-period swell pulses.

The best is due Sunday though not likely to top 4ft across the South West magnets, 1ft in Mandurah and Perth. Winds look gusty from the SE tending S/SE each day as a coastal trough squeezes a strong high, with less favourable S/SE winds into early next week.

Longer term there's nothing too major on the cards so make the most of the swell over the coming days.

Hey Craig, it's your ol' pal Gary G.

You don't usually see Gary around these parts of the site but right now Gary is on tour; a pilgrimage of sorts. Gary was conceived down south, you see. In a carpark after a surf at one of the aforementioned magnets.

Gary's had a strong game as a sandgroper for years but growing up Over East he could never really understand why. Discovering this information about his heritage made everything so much clearer.

Look out for Gary out west in coming days, he's kind of hard to miss.

You’re getting better by the minute, Gary G.

Be careful in WA though . That much beefcake in the water always attracts lots of attention and in WA that’s not always a good thing.

Really? In WA? Don’t think so mate. There’s a lot more surfable uncrowded beachies over east. In WA its either too small, too huge, too windy, too closing out or too crowded. Or too sharky. Mostly just closing out.

Heaps of beach breaks just south of Margs, everyone should go to the valley for the shear beauty. Rabbit hill, Smith's in the north. And the not to mention ones, inside out barreling perfection when its on. And the south coast has incredible beaches.
