Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 28th August)

Best Days: Protected spots around Margs Saturday, Perth and Mandurah Sunday, all locations Monday

Recap

Good waves all weekend across the South West with a new S/SW groundswell for Saturday morning, easing off slowly through the day, further Sunday. Mandurah saw fun 2ft+ sets Saturday, tiny into Sunday while Perth remained on the small to tiny side.

Today the surf was even small and only surfable at magnets around Margs.

This week and weekend (Aug 29 – Sep 3)

The surf will continue to bottom out tomorrow morning across the state with tiny to flat conditions around Perth and Mandurah and very small surf in the South West. E/SE tending S/SE winds will favour magnets early.

We then look towards the very inconsistent long-range W/SW groundswell due to start building tomorrow afternoon, further Wednesday ahead of a peak into the afternoon.

This swell was generated by a vigorous storm firing up and into South Africa before weakening west of a line drawn south from Madagascar.

The 22s forerunners should be seen tomorrow morning, with an afternoon lift in size, building slowly towards a peak Wednesday afternoon to 6ft on the sets across Margs, 1-1.5ft around Perth and Mandurah. The morning will be a bit smaller and winds are now due to be onshore in any case as an approaching front brings S/SW tending W/SW breezes.

The swell should ease into Thursday but winds will linger onshore from the SW across the South West and W/NW tending SW around Perth and Mandurah.

We'll see some new swell from the frontal activity filling in Friday, ahead of a larger swell SW groundswell Saturday.

The first swell will be produced by a weak fetch of strong to nearly gale-force fetch of W/SW winds pushing towards us over the coming days.

This should see 5-6ft surf across the South West Friday with 2ft waves to the north, while into Saturday larger SW swell will fill in. This will be generated by a stronger and broader fetch of W/SW tending SW gales projecting right up towards us.

Large 10ft surf is due across the South West with 3ft sets to the north around Perth and Mandurah as winds swing S/SW Friday and remain less than ideal from the S'th Saturday.

Onshores look to kick in again on Sunday as the swell eases as a polar front projecting towards the Bight interferes with the South West. Perth and Mandurah will see E/SE offshores.

Longer term the front responsible for Sunday's winds will generate a good large S/SW groundswell for Monday with light offshore winds on the cards, but more on this Wednesday.
