Large swell tomorrow, big again Saturday
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 24th May)
Best Days: Perth and Mandurah Thursday and Saturday mornings, Margs Saturday morning and Sunday morning, both coasts Monday morning
Recap
Average onshore waves in the South West yesterday and today, while further north conditions were cleaner and fun with 2ft sets yesterday. This morning Mandurah was tiny and onshore, with some tiny options around Perth.
This week and weekend (May 25 – 28)
We should be starting to see some new swell building across the state today, but our larger groundswell event for tomorrow is still on track. The intense low linked to this swell is now south of us and out of our swell window.
We should see a large long-period W/SW groundswell peaking tomorrow to 10ft+ in the South West and 2-3ft in Perth, easing later in the day and smaller into Friday morning.
A new SW swell is then due to build later Friday, peaking Saturday morning, produced by a mid-latitude front strengthening south-west of is tomorrow.
The size from this swell has been downgraded a little, with the front forming a little later and moving off quicker than forecast on Monday.
We should see Margs building back to 6-8ft later in the day, with 2ft waves all day to the north. Saturday morning may reveal a touch more size, before the swell eases into the afternoon, further Sunday.
Winds tomorrow morning will be offshore in Perth and Mandurah, while Margs will see freshening NW winds, tending W/NW across all coasts into the afternoon.
Friday looks onshore everywhere with a S/SW breeze, while S/SE breezes are likely Saturday with the secondary SW groundswell event. Perth should see better SE offshores.
Sunday will be much cleaner across exposed breaks in the South West with a light offshore wind but the swell small and easing from 4-5ft or so. Perth and Mandurah should fade from 1-2ft.
Longer term some good inconsistent SW groundswell is due early next week, generated by a broad and strong fetch of pre-frontal W/NW gales.
This should fill in Monday and come in at 6ft or so with favourable offshore winds. A secondary SW groundswell is likely mid-week but winds look to go back onshore. More on this Friday.
