Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 12th May)

Best Days: No great days (keen surfers Wednesday and Thursday mornings)

Recap

Great waves across the South West most of yesterday with a solid easing swell from the 6ft+ range with offshore winds only giving into relatively weak sea breezes. Mandurah and Perth were smaller and back to 1-2ft.

This morning tiny waves were seen to the north, while Margs was offering inconsistent 3-4ft sets across magnets.

This weekend and next week (May 13 – 19)

The coming few days (and period) aren't looking too flash, with even smaller surf tomorrow, clean during the morning under a variable breeze with weak afternoon sea breezes. Swell magnets around Margs may see stray 2-3ft sets, but that's about it.

Into Sunday we'll see conditions deteriorate as a deepening mid-latitude low starts to encroach on the coast, resulting in freshening N/NE tending N/NW winds. Some small mid-period swell should start to build, but by the time it reaches any reasonable size conditions will be poor.

The low is now looking a little weaker and not too amazing swell generation wise, with a patchy fetch of strong to gale-force W/NW tending W/SW winds moving into the state.

This will generate some weak W/NW swell for Monday morning to a stormy 3ft in Perth and 6ft+ or so around Margs with strong W'ly tending SW winds.

The low will start to push east through Tuesday next week and with it the swell will drop quickly Tuesday, tending more SW and the S/SW in direction.

Onshore S/SW winds will persist across the South West Tuesday, with the outside chance of an early S/SE'ly around Perth with weak easing 2ft sets. Margs should be easing from 4-6ft.

Wednesday will be much cleaner with E/SE offshores, but the swell back to 3-4ft in the South West and tiny to the north.

Longer term some very inconsistent SW groundswell is on the cards for late week and next weekend, generated in our far swell window south and south-east of South Africa. These swells look to be overridden by mid-latitude fronts firing up directly west of us at the same time they arrive, creating larger surf but with onshore winds. We'll have a closer look at this Monday though. Have a great weekend!
