Plenty of surf this weekend; narrow windows of OK winds

Victoria Forecast by Ben Matson (issued Wednesday 20th June)

Best Days: Sat/Sun: strong building groundswells, good surf west of Melbourne early mornings. Wind affected and choppy east of Melbourne.

Recap: Easing swells and generally light N/NE winds have provided fun small waves across open beaches.

Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This week (June 21 - 22)

Want to receive an email when these Forecaster Notes are updated? Then log in here and update your preferences.

Note: Today’s Forecaster Notes will be brief, as Craig is away on annual leave.

Small surf is expected for the next few days, with moderate NW winds favouring the Surf Coast. Unfortunately we won’t see much size here; distant, intermittent energy will keep open beaches just rideable but it’ll be slow going.

Winds won’t be too strong on Thursday so open beaches east of Melbourne should have workable options, but freshening NW winds are expected into Friday as a front approaches from the west, and this will cause problems. Wave heights will be an ideal size for the beachies though.

This weekend (June 23 - 24)

We’ve got a few minor changes in store for the weekend outlook.

The models slightly tweaked the dynamics of the Southern Indian Ocean low generating our weekend’s long period groundswell; easing back the primary fetch but slightly intensifying a secondary polar well to the south (though still a long way from our coast). This will contribute the bulk of the long period energy this weekend.

Also, the models have changed the timing on the associated front pushing through our swell window over the coming days, and have nudged it a little further north since Monday’s runs (i.e. giving it more influence over our local winds and weather) - but this has slightly upped the mid-range swell potential.

As for local conditions, we’re now looking at a brief period of freshening W/NW winds Saturday morning, before the front moves through by mid-morning, delivering fresh SW winds thereafter.

A weak secondary front to the SW on Saturday should assist in steering Sunday morning’s winds around to the W/NW in Torquay again, but we’re likely to see a return to the W/SW or SW throughout the day. SW winds will prevail across most other coasts (i.e. east of Melbourne) all weekend.

Despite these synoptic changes, the surf height figures I mentioned in Monday notes are probably still a good fit, building from 2-3ft to 3-4ft+ across the Surf Coast throughout Saturday (i.e. biggest surf with the least favourable conditions, much smaller earlier). However Sunday is unlikely to see an easing trend at all - in fact we may see a few bigger sets at reliable reefs - so perhaps 3-5ft is a better size estimate. Set waves will be somewhat inconsisent though.

East of Melbourne, it’ll be too big and messy for open beaches but only small for protected spots inside Western Port. So, don't get your hopes up across this stretch.

Next week (June 25 onwards)

Easing swells and winds are expected next week; there’s a few relatively standard winter swell systems on the cards mid-late week but nothing to pin down at this stage.

Great. Another week of flat surf followed by a tiny window of OK stuff on Saturday morning. Crowdnet have made the call so we can expect the idiot mob to descend en-mass. It will be small enough for any clown to get out, yet big enough for said clowns to get into trouble. My prediction. Another wasted day with 60-70 in the lineup, inconsistent surf and some poor local 9-5er getting a board in the head. Thanks a fucking lot crowd net/huey.

Yo Freddy,
It's called "Sparras". Named after John "Sparra" Pyeburn, he used to be Rip Curls wettie guy and made the wave his own back in the day.
He also ran the Rip Curl wind & wave report in the days before the internet.

I'm with Vic local and Freddy. Gotta love the share button for fb and twitter at the top and bottom of every forecast page. Bring on the weekend warrior and his warrior mates who have seen his repost of crowdnets weekend forecast. Good on ya and your social mistakes.

Sharing reports on facebook. It's a reason there's so many complete dickheads in the water these days.
Crowdnet fucks up so many sessions in their quest for hits and $$$.

i was thinking the same thing what is going to be more brain damage this weekend the beach or the bottom of the hill waiting for the ski lift...
its going to be an interesting next ten years in melbourne population wise with currently 2500 people moving to melbourne victoria each week to live and estimated extra 2million in the next 10 years..... i wonder what % of that 2million will be surfers.....im just glad i learnt to wavesail and kitesurf and still scratch my head at all surfers with blinkers on looking for swell and offshores but waisting all the time and energy the ocean has to offer when its perfect or not so perfect to sail.....

Can I just point out that if you surf good enough and are fit enough to paddle for 2 hours in a crowd you can catch as many waves as you want. Coming on swellnet and venting your frustrations behind your keyboard ain't going to help your wave count down the surf coast this weekend.

Prove me wrong Viclocal and post a recent photo of yourself surfing...We live in one of the better states for crowds, Torquay isn't the only place for waves.

"Can I just point out that if you surf good enough and are fit enough to paddle for 2 hours in a crowd you can catch as many waves as you want". I will just assume you're one of those fuckers who paddles around like a blue arse fly snaking everyone who is patiently waiting for their wave. You can do that if you want, but if you think you're going to pick off set waves by yourself with that attitude you're deluding yourself.

So your not going to post a photo proving your herculean efforts on the reefs, validating your aggressive opinions on what is an excellent website that enriches peoples surfing lives?

Tourism related, but the number of my guests who surf the points is zero. Mate, your website is a fucking menace.

No mate. I don't. In the past a group of guests (under 10) requested a surf lesson and I've pointed them in the direction of surf schools. Little Ben thinks that somehow means that excludes me from criticising his website that draws the masses to the lineups.

Jeez mate, you're downplaying things - your website has three local surf tourism products related to Torquay (one of 'em even states that you'll take people to Bancoora!), and another website says that you offer guided adventure surf trips to Indonesia.

Doesn't your corporate profile also state that you worked in the surf industry for ten years?

BTW, I enjoyed the Little Ben reference too - reminds me of Trumpian tactics.

So, just confirming you run a local tourism business that includes surfing, but your qualifier is that your clients “don’t surf the point”.

velocityjohnno's picture

Think so but I'm sure it's been raised on the NSW and QLD notes - those places are mega packed.
I've had good discussions on the synoptic on the WA and Tas forecaster notes, that is what it's all about really. Go surfing and smile.
The Vic notes can be really funny though, probably the notes with the most banter (I miss Ralph). And there's substance behind it, if you compare the pressures on the coast to previous decades. As the economy shifts from making things to selling experiences, those experiences are going to get diluted and this can be painful to see happen. Tragedy of the Commons.

There's no doubt a good swellnet forecast has a huge effect on crowds down here. I think us Victorians are more vocal about it due to the fact that we don't have the mega crowds of NSW and QLD, so a small influx of people is definitely more noticeable (especially in winter). But it's true- whenever there is a good swellnet report (even if it's incorrect) there will be twice as many people in the water. Swellnet have a business to run so can't be too hard on them, if they weren't providing the service someone else would be.
On the positive side - my mate and I have had some cracking sessions and plenty of waves to ourselves when the swellnet forecast is bad and the conditions prove otherwise. So it can work both ways.

It's looking increasingly like it's going to be very average to shithouse down here this weekend anyway, so save your time/petty money and find something else to do would be my tip.
