Sydney Hunter Illawarra Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 12th June)

Best Days: Thursday

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Fading mix of E and S swells tomorrow with W/NW winds
  • Small acute S'ly swell filling in Thu (undersized early), peaking into the PM across the Hunter
  • Gusty W tending lightet W/NW winds Thu
  • Fading S swell Fri with W winds and weak sea breezes
  • Possible long-range E swell later next week

Recap

A small weekend of surf with background easterly swell to a slow 2ft across the magnets Saturday, 1-2ft yesterday ahead of a late pulse of inconsistent S'ly groundswell. This and some small background east swell has provided 2ft sets into this morning with great conditions.

This week and weekend (Jun 13 - 18)

This forecast will be brief with Steve being back on board with a much more detailed analysis Wednesday.

There's not much to talk abut this week unfortunately.

Our small pulses of S'ly groundswell back background E'ly swell are due to ease into tomorrow, with the surf bottoming out in the 1ft range, similar Wednesday.

The next increase in size will arrive out of the S'th and be a fleeting mid-period number.

The source is a high riding, weak mid-latitude low moving across the south-east of the country on Wednesday, exiting eastern Bass Strait into the evening.

A brief fetch of strong W/SW winds will be aimed north of New Zealand, with Sydney and the Hunter seeing a small bit of S'ly swell spreading radially out into us on Thursday. The swell is due to build through the day, peaking midday but only to 2-3ft on the south magnets in Sydney (tiny elsewhere) with the Hunter building to 3-4ft into the afternoon. Further south the swell will unfortunately miss.

Winds will be favourable though with a gusty, morning W'ly due to tend variable W/NW on Thursday, clean again Friday but with the swell fading quickly. Sydney looks to ease back from 1-2ft on the south magnets, 2ft+ in Newcastle.

The weekend looks void of any swell, as does early to mid next week, but longer term we've got model agreement regarding a deepening and expanding low to the east and then north-east of New Zealand next week. This could generate a good pulse of E'ly swell late week if it doesn't sit too far south and behind New Zealand. More on this Wednesday.

I think this is the longest I’ve been out of the water in a few years.

I tell myself that the banks are repairing in the flat spells. Hopefully that's actually true..

The East Coast fairs much better with La Niña's, not El Niño's.

Yeah Indo is calling! Time to renew my P/port, do I get a refund for the 3yrs I couldn't use it (2020 thru to 2022) due to a RORT called Covid 19! Been some really GR8 clean conditions of late but just a lack of solid swell with the biggest being 3 to 4ft a week ago now!
