Southern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday June 13th)

Best Days: Every day this week besides Thursday, Saturday

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Easing S swell tomorrow with a strong pulse of new S/SW groundswell arriving late morning. NW tending N/NW winds
  • Easing S/SW swell Wed with N-N/NE winds
  • Strong SE groundswell for Fri with N/NW tending variable winds, easing Sat with similar winds

Recap

Friday’s strong pulse of S/SW swell eased back temporarily into Saturday morning as we fell between cold fronts, but the strongest of the polar systems pushed up through the day, bringing a late afternoon increase in large S’ly swell, peaking Sunday with favourable winds for protected spots.

Today the swell is still large with a reinforcing pulse of S’ly swell filling in with more favourable winds for exposed locations.

This week and weekend (Jun 14 - 19)

We’ve got plenty more surf to sift through now that the large episode is on the way out.

Today’s reinforcing S’ly pulse should ease through tomorrow, down from 3ft across Clifton and with NW tending N/NW winds, creating great conditions.

A final polar low firing up south-west of us last night should generate a strong new S/SW groundswell for tomorrow afternoon, with a fetch of severe-gale SW winds produced in our southern swell window.

This should deliver strong 3-4ft sets after lunch tomorrow, easing back from 2-3ft on Wednesday morning.

Winds on Wednesday will continue to be favourable with a N-N/NE breeze persisting all day.

Now, moving into the end of the week, we’ve got a good pulse of SE groundswell due across the South Arm, generated by the backside of the large, slow moving Southern Ocean gyre linked to our recent swell.

A great fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SE winds will be generated south of New Zealand, with the swell arriving on dark Thursday but peaking Friday.

This swell will be large on the East Coast but we should see 3-4ft sets across Clifton with larger surf on the more exposed breaks.

Winds look favourable and NW tending variable on Friday with N/NW tending variable breezes Saturday as the swell starts easing from 2-3ft. The longevity will be thanks to the scope and sustained nature of the swell generating fetch south of New Zealand.

Following this there’s nothing too significant on the cards so make the most of the coming surf days.
