Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 19th March)

Best Days: Selected locations tomorrow, possibly early Friday, Saturday

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Easing SW groundswell tomorrow ahead of a new pulse for the afternoon, easing Sun with N tending E/NE winds each day
  • Building W/SW swell Thu, easing from the S/SW Fri with loght W/NW winds Fri AM

Recap

Good conditions and a bit less swell yesterday, easing from Wednesday. Today we've got a new pulse of swell though it looks like it's come in mostly around 2ft or so instead of the expected 3ft.

This weekend and next week (Mar 20 - 26)

Cape Sorell data is looking good regarding today's swell and even though it doesn't look as big as forecast, tomorrow morning should still be 1-2ft with a morning N'ly ahead of afternoon E/NE breezes.

Our new pulse of SW groundswell for the afternoon is on track, with the secondary polar low linked to this currently south-west of us, generating a fetch of W'ly gales.

We'll see it kicking to 2ft late afternoon across Clifton, easing Sunday from 1-2ft, then tiny Monday. Winds will remain favourable and out of the N each morning, tending fresh E/NE into the afternoons.

For the rest of the week there's nothing major on the cards at all until Thursday.

On Thursday we'll see a mid-latitude low moving in from the west, with a fetch of strong to near gale-force W/SW tending S/SW winds due to be aimed through our close-range swell window.

A good pulse of W/SW tending S/SW swell is likely, kicking Thursday to 3ft, easing from a similar size Friday. Conditions look to be average when the swell builds Thursday afternoon with a SW change, cleaner Friday morning but we'll have a closer look at this dynamic system Monday. Have a great weekend!
