Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 20th January)

Best Days: Thursday morning, Friday morning, Saturday morning, beginner waves from Sunday through most of next week

Recap

Tiny clean waves yesterday, while today was onshore and tiny early, but a new SW groundswell has since built across Clifton.

This week and weekend (Jan 21 – 24)

This afternoon's increase in SW groundswell should be replaced by a stronger SW groundswell tomorrow morning generated by a vigorous polar frontal progression that last few days. Solid 2ft+ sets are due across Clifton through the morning, easing into the afternoon with NW offshores ahead of afternoon SE sea breezes.

A secondary pulse of W/SW groundswell generated by a secondary front for Friday is looking good, with the frontal system currently just south-west of us, producing a broad and elongated fetch of W/NW to W/SW gales.

This swell will be more westerly in nature and continue to offer 2ft waves across Clifton before easing from 1-2ft into Saturday. Offshore NW winds are due again Friday morning ahead of SE sea breezes, with similar offshores Saturday morning ahead of a W/SW change through the day.

Weaker background frontal activity should keep small 1ft+ sets hitting Clifton Sunday and Monday before easing back Tuesday ahead of another good pulse Thursday to 1-1.5ft.

Longer term small to tiny pulses of swell are due to continue through next week, but we'll have a closer look at this Friday.
