Southern Tasmania Forecast (issued Monday 18th Aug)

Best Days: Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning, Thursday, Friday, Saturday exposed spots

Recap

A drop in swell was seen into Saturday with nice clean 2ft'ers across Clifton under light offshore winds. Sunday saw similar conditions with 2ft of swell and morning offshores ahead of a poor afternoon S/SE change.

This morning the swell eased back to 1-1.5ft, but a fresh SW groundswell should of arrived through the day (Cape Sorell is showing good signs regarding this swells arrival) with light offshore tending light onshore winds.

This week (Aug 19 - 2)

This afternoon's kick in SW groundswell is expected to ease back through tomorrow but we should still see 2ft to occasionally 3ft sets at dawn under NW tending W/SW winds, so surf before lunch.

Another good pulse is due through Wednesday afternoon ahead of a less consistent but stronger pulse Thursday morning.

These swells have been generated by a flurry of strong polar frontal activity pushing east along the polar shelf from Heard Island all the way under the country the past 4-5 days.

A late pulse to 2-3ft is due Wednesday ahead of stronger 3ft+ waves Thursday morning. Winds will be favourable and good from the W/NW Wednesday morning ahead of a shift to the SW during the day, while Thursday looks great with N/NW tending N/NE winds.

A drop in size should be seen from 2ft or so Friday morning under fresh N'ly winds.

This weekend onwards (Aug 23 onwards)

There's nothing significant on the cards for the weekend with the swell expected to bottom out Saturday with offshore tending variable winds.

Through Sunday/Monday and Wednesday we'll see long-range and very inconsistent W/SW groundswell energy, but not to any major size. This is due to the swells being generated in the Southern Indian Ocean to the west-southwest and south-west of WA, resulting in no major size for us.

If anything Wednesday's swell will be better as it's produced further south and more in our swell window, but nothing above 2ft is expected. We'll review this again Wednesday though.
