South Australian Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 17th October)

Best Days: Wednesday both coasts, Thursday South Coast

Recap

An average weekend for surf with Saturday providing the best waves at swell magnets on the South Coast. The Mid Coast was tiny and choppy/bumpy.

Today the swell was small again from the W/SW across the South Coast with W'ly breezes, while the Mid was a choppy and average 2ft or so.

This week (Oct 18 - 21)

As has been discussed since Monday last week, we're set to see a strong and powerful SW groundswell mid-week, generated by a storm that developed in the southern Indian Ocean late last week.

This storm has been generating a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds, confirmed by satellite observations, and is now weakening but broadening while projecting nicely towards us.

Tomorrow we'll actually see mid-period and strengthening W/SW swell building across the state, from the weakening storm pushing into and under us today and tomorrow.

The Mid Coast is to see to 2-3ft waves but with windswell in the mix under strong but easing W/SW winds.

Middleton should build from 2ft+ through the morning, more towards 3-5ft into the late afternoon although besides an early W/NW'ly, conditions will be poor with a fresh to strong W/SW breeze.

The SW groundswell proper is due to fill in overnight Tuesday, peaking Wednesday morning to a strong 5-6ft at Middleton with larger 8ft sets at exposed breaks. The Mid Coast should continue at 2ft, with 3ft sets likely on the favourable parts of the tide.

Conditions look great for the South Coast breaks handling the swell with a light NW-N/NW breeze, tending variable into the afternoon.

The Mid Coast should also be good with variable winds all day.

Come Thursday the swell will be easing steadily from the 4ft range at Middleton under gusty N/NE tending N/NW winds. The Mid should drop from 1-2ft.

A small reinforcing SW swell is on the cards for Friday but an onshore change is expected with W/SW tending S/SW winds, creating poor conditions.

This weekend onwards (Oct 22 onwards)

The weekend unfortunately isn't looking too flash with onshore S'ly winds for the South Coast and no real size for the Mid. A new SW groundswell is due Saturday down South, produce by a polar fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds, along with some S/SW windswell from the change, but only to a messy 3-4ft or so.

Longer term some fun groundswells are on the cards for next week, but more on this Wednesday.
