Average winds until late week with plenty of swell
South Australian Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 12th September)
Best Days: South Coast keen surfers Thursday, South Coast Friday, Saturday morning and protected spots Sunday
Recap
Good conditions across the South Coast Saturday with a new swell and light offshore winds before a shallow SW'ly moved through midday.
Sunday was excellent as a strong new SW groundswell moved in, kicking to a solid 4-5ft off Middleton and 6ft+ at offshore reefs and bommies as well as Waits. Conditions were great all day with persistent offshore NW-W/NW winds.
The Mid saw bumpy 2ft waves through Saturday which were workable if not fussy, while Sunday was around 1-2ft through the morning and lumpy, kicking into the afternoon as winds backed off.
This morning clean good 2ft sets were seen across the Mid Coast, while the South Coast was a bumpy and average 3-4ft or so with E'ly winds. A SE change has since moved through, creating poor conditions.
This week (Sep 13 - 16)
Into tomorrow, our strong pulse of S/SW groundswell is still on track, generated over the weekend by a strong polar front pushing through our southern swell window.
Middleton should continue around 3-4ft but the Mid will fade from a tiny 1-1.5ft. Conditions will remain average down South with a SE'ly (at best E/SE) with the Mid being the cleanest for beginners.
Into Wednesday conditions will remain poor with a deepening inland trough/low to our south-east expected to direct a fetch of S'ly winds into the South Coast.
Thursday and more so Friday are the day to surfs as the low pushes east and winds become variable into Thursday, offshore from the N/NW Friday.
Another good pulse of S/SW groundswell is due Thursday, produced by a severe-gale pre-frontal fetch of W/NW winds along the polar shelf the last couple of days and today.
This swell will be a touch inconsistent but come in with solid 3-4ft+ sets across Middleton, 5-6ft at Waits and Parsons, easing back from 3-4ft Friday morning. The Mid Coast isn't due to see any decent size off this swell at all. Friday will be the day with offshore winds as the swell eases.
This weekend onwards (Sep 17 onwards)
Into the weekend two good pulse of S/SW groundswell are due from continued polar frontal activity to the south-west and south of WA. The best swell for Sunday will begin around Heard Island. Conditions look best in protected spots though with a W'ly breeze Sunday, but more on this Wednesday.
