Recap

Easing levels of NE windswell from 2ft were seen yesterday with favourable conditions for southern corners.

Today an inconsistent E/SE swell from a strong low that formed south-east of New Zealand is providing 2ft+ waves with early light winds that have since strengthened out of the N/NE along with a building windswell.

This week and next (Jan 16 - 24)

A strong S/SW change is due just after dark this evening and this will kill off the infeed of NE winds and associated windswell. A mix of easing E/SE and NE swells are then due tomorrow from 2ft on the sets under a SW tending E/SE then weaker E/NE breeze.

Tiny surf looks to pad out Friday and Saturday along with strong S-S/SW tending S/SE winds on the former, S/SE tending E/SE winds on the later.

These winds will be thanks to a broad low forming in the Tasman Sea, with a fetch of swell producing SE winds firing up to our south-east through Saturday, projecting towards us through the afternoon and evening.

This will produce a moderate sized pulse of E/SE swell that should build later Sunday and peak through Monday to 4-5ft across open beaches.

At the same time, on Sunday a fetch of E’ly gales off New Zealand’s North Island should produce a secondary reinforcing E’ly groundswell for Tuesday, building through the day and peaking into the afternoon to 4-5ft.

This swell looks prolonged as a fetch of strong to gale-force E’ly winds hold through Monday and Tuesday, maintaining moderate sized surf through Wednesday before easing slowly Thursday.

Local winds should be variable offshore Monday morning ahead of E’ly sea breezes, N/NW-N on Tuesday morning before strengthening from the N/NE. Come Wednesday a trough looks to bring a strong S’ly change and some small, additional S’ly swell. More on this Friday.
