Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri October 13th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Easing surf Sat with W/NW winds
  • Stronger S swell Sun with W-W/SW winds tending W/NW in the a’noon
  • Small S swell Mon with S’ly winds
  • Small/tiny surf most of next week, possibly minor NE windswell Wed

Recap

Small NE swells to 1-2ft yesterday with some new S swell to 2ft today under W’ly winds which tended SW before sweeping back NW in the a’noon. A few small waves at S facing corners.

This weekend and next week (Oct 14 - 19)

Todays frontal passage with strong SW winds out of Bass Strait and a fetch moving NE past Tasmania sees an a’noon peak in S swell with an easing through Sat. Expect NW winds before another front brings W/SW winds through the day. Small S swell wrap continues into the 1-2ft range.

Stronger frontal winds later Sat below the state (see below) bring stronger S swell for Sun, under similar winds, except starting W/SW and clocking around W/NW through the day. Size builds into the 3ft range at S facing beaches during the day.

Next week will see a low form in the Tasman, likely off the Gippsland coast, bringing fresh S’ly winds Mon and a slight bump in new S’ly windswell.

Unfortunately for NETas the low quickly moves NE with the fetch located too far north to generate meaningful swells for the east coast.

We may see a small bump in NE windswell Wed as N’ly winds form off the Gippsland coast but size won’t exceed 1-2ft, if that.

Small mixed bag then occupies the rest of the week, likely under 2ft.

There is some instability off the Gipplsand coast next weekend which may offer some potential for E swell but it’s way too far off to have any certainty over size or timing.

Check back Mon and we’ll see how it’s shaping up.

Until then, have a great weekend!
