Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 30th November)
Best Days: Tomorrow, Thursday, Saturday, possibly Sunday/Monday
Recap
Nothing too special over the weekend with a few scraps for the keen.
This week and weekend (Dec 1 - 6)
Tomorrow we've got a fun N/NE swell due across the coast as a strengthening cold front pushing in from the west squeezes a high in the Tasman Sea.
Strengthening and broadening N/NE winds early tomorrow and through the morning should produce a rapid increase in N/NE windswell with sets reaching 3-5ft through the day along with strong N'ly breezes, shifting N/NW around midday and then more NW-W/NW late.
Wednesday will see strong W/NW winds as a very strong low pushes across us along with easing levels of N/NE windswell from 1-2ft max.
Now, this low which was pointed out last Friday looks to just fall short of the 'bombing' classification and it's now expected to be strongest west of our swell window.
The swell potential from this system is now tricky, with a great fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds expected to be generated through our swell window, but this is very zonal.
As a result, the swell spike out of the S'th will be small-moderate and short-lived, arriving Thursday and coming in at a fun 3-4ft or so across the south magnets during the day, with much smaller surf at other locations.
Winds will be great for these magnets though with a weaker though still fresh W/NW breeze, holding all day.
Come Friday there isn't expected to be any S'ly swell left but a small polar fetch of S/SW gales firing up on the tail of the low Thursday should produce a fun S'ly swell for Saturday afternoon. It looks like south facing beaches will reach 2-3ft along with a NW tending strong N/NE wind ahead of another deepening low approaching from the west.
This low will deepen as it moves across us, with a N/NE windswell later Saturday followed by S'ly swell Sunday, though the size is still unclear. Check back here on Wednesday and Friday for a greater idea.
