Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 19th June)

Best Days: Saturday, Sunday, Monday morning, protected spots Tuesday, Thursday onwards

Recap

A fun pulse of better S'ly swell yesterday, replaced today by a building NE windswell.

This weekend and next week (June 20 - 26)

We're now on the cusp of an extended run of swell from the eastern quadrant owing to a broad and stalling mid-latitude low moving in slowly from the west on the weekend and then setting up camp in the Tasman Sea.

As the low edges slowly east we'll see a fetch of strong NE winds developing just off our coast tomorrow, remaining at arms length through Sunday.

The fetch is a little weaker than forecast on Wednesday but with better local winds. We should see a small increase in E/NE energy tomorrow afternoon but more so Sunday. Tomorrow will be mostly tiny, kicking later in the day to 2-3ft with Sunday likely seeing better 3ft to occasionally 4ft sets.

Light W'ly morning winds will give into N'ly sea breezes tomorrow afternoon but without too much strength and then variable SW-S/SW winds on Sunday, favouring southern corners.

The swell looks to back off temporarily Monday morning but we'll see the low broadening in scope through the day and aiming a fetch of E/NE winds through our swell window, with an embedded low projecting a fetch of gales towards us.

This will kick up a large E/NE tending E/SE swell for Tuesday with stormy surf to the 8ft range expected on the coast. Winds will be accordingly strong from the S/SE-SE on Tuesday, favouring only a few protected spots, with large surf and less favourable onshore E/SE winds likely to continue into Wednesday.

The low is forecast to contract slightly towards New Zealand through the middle of next week while continuing to aim a fetch of strong to gale-force E/SE winds towards us. This should see cleaner conditions from later week with large levels of swell persisting into the weekend.

The specifics on this are still being resolved, so again, check back here Monday for the latest. Have a great weekend!
