Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 30th August)

Best Days: Thursday morning, Friday and Saturday northern corners, Sunday

Recap

A fresh pulse of S'ly swell arrived through yesterday and I'm not sure of its source. This provided solid sets to 3-4ft across exposed beaches with offshore winds.

Today we've got a S'ly windswell from a strong cold front pushing up past us, though conditions are average. We should see the swell building further to 3-4ft across south magnets later today.

This week and weekend (Aug 31 – Sep 3)

Today's S'ly change is linked to a strong polar front pushing up past us, but we're now seeing a Tasman Low forming from the remnants of this change.

This low will form to our east-northeast and we'll see a good fetch of strong S/SE winds extending to New Zealand's South Island, in our south-eastern swell window.

This fetch will persist from early tomorrow morning through Friday before easing slowly into Saturday.

What we'll see is easing levels of S/SE swell tomorrow from 2-3ft or so ahead of some stronger SE tending E/SE swell filling in Friday and reaching 3-4ft, easing slowly from a similar size Saturday morning, down further from 2-3ft Sunday.

Winds tomorrow should be W/SW inshore early, tending SE through the day with NW tending gusty N'ly winds Friday, leaving northern corners with the cleanest conditions.

N/NW winds are expected to persist Saturday now, with gusty N'ly tending W/NW winds Sunday as a strong front approaches from the west. This strong N'ly will produce some good N/NE windswell during the day, reaching 3ft across north facing beaches just as the change moves through.

Monday is then due to be small with a fading mix of swells.

Longer term a strong node of the Long Wave Trough is expected to stall across us next week, but its position will remain too far west initially to generate any sizey S'ly swell across our region. More on this Friday.
