Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 8th July)

Best Days: Saturday morning, Sunday morning, northern corners Monday, Thursday at south swell magnets

Recap

Cleaner and good 4-5ft waves across the region yesterday with a S'ly wind, while a slight drop in size was seen this morning as winds persisted from the S'th.

This weekend and next week (Jul 9 - 15)

We'll continue to see plenty of good quality E'ly groundswell across the coast through the weekend, with the broad intense and stalling Tasman Low continuing to aim a fetch of strong to gale-force E/SE winds through our eastern swell window last night and this morning.

Last night the strongest of the winds were generated through our swell window and we'll see this pulse fill in through tomorrow, kicking open beaches back to 3-5ft through the day. A slight drop in size is due into Sunday morning back to 3-4ft or so, but our final pulse of strong E/NE groundswell for later in the day is still on track.

As the Tasman Low retracts to the east, a fetch of gale to severe-gale E'ly winds will be generated out of Cook Strait and off New Zealand's North Island this afternoon evening. This will generate a strong E/NE groundswell, kicking late Sunday to 4-5ft across open beaches, easing back quickly from 3-5ft Monday morning.

Come Tuesday fading 2ft surf is due.

Winds on both Saturday and Sunday mornings should be W/NW, tending light NE Saturday afternoon and stronger N/NE Sunday afternoon.

This will also kick up a windswell for Monday morning, with fresh N/NW winds persisting most of the day. Better offshore NW tending W/SW winds are then due Tuesday.

After the E'ly swell fades, we've got a strong cold outbreak expected across the state due mid-week.

It won't be until later Wednesday and into Thursday that we'll see any meaningful fetch developing in our swell window.

A broad and elongated fetch of less than favourable SW gales will be projected up past our coast Wednesday afternoon, with a secondary burst of less favourable W/SW gales dawn Thursday.

Some small refracted S'ly groundswell is due off this activity, hopefully coming in at 3-5ft across south swell magnets Thursday morning, easing off later and further Friday. Conditions will be good with offshore W'ly winds for the most part.

Longer term there's nothing major so make the most of the coming E'ly swell! Have a great weekend.
